Not that I think it impacted the result, because we were shite before his red, but we've successfully appealed the red card v Spurs. So why wasn't VAR used at the time to get the ref to take a look? What's the fucking point of VAR??

What I want to know is did the VAR ref ask the on-field ref if he saw that Bruno slipped prior to the contact?
For some stupid reason, the VAR refs can't "re-referee" the game - I suppose that takes precedence over accuracy but even with that consideration, the VAR ref should have informed the on-field ref that Bruno slipped and if the ref hadn't seen it, then he should have been called to the screen.

I think there's an obvious improvement opportunity which would allow for the use of technology without undermining the refs authority; for incidents that lead a ref to believe a straight red may be required, they have the option, or even that they're mandated to have a look on the screen at the side of the pitch before ruling. It'd be worth the 30 secs delay for the number of times it happens, given that sending off are generally the most impactful decisions referees have on a game.

when we regularly and quite often several times a game have to waste a fair amount of time waiting for the linesman to flag an obvious offside, it seems pretty ridiculous not to "waste" some more time making sure really pivotal decisions are correct.

I hate how they let play go on even when they know it's offside. It's total bullshit. It makes you cautious about getting excited when there's an attack.

Cautious everytime there is a goal, always not sure if it's going to be ruled out.

I hate VAR, and would get rid of it. It ruins the games flow.

VAR's primary goal is to maintain the status of the on field ref. That's the problem. They won't overrule the ref unlike other sports.

Just implement these two solutions.
VAR should be 100% independent of refs and VAR should have the final say.
That's it. That'll solve the refereeing problem very quickly.

Unrealistic dream scenario: They cancel VAR altogether because it's shite

Likely scenario: The rules continue to change every season as they scramble around trying to adapt the rules to the tech instead of vice versa

Need to look at how it’s used in rugby.
The on field officials make the decisions based on what they see and only call for off field support if they aren’t clear about the decision to make. The off field support also advises the ref if they spot something that needs to be brought to his attention, such as off the ball foul play.
Seems to work pretty well and supports the ref rather than undermining him.

Don't know if many of you are on reddit, but my brother is always sending me links from there. There are some great highlight reels on reddevils.

This one shows how good Bruno has been since Amorim came in (all season tbf). I know the system isn't amazing at the moment, but imagine if we'd scored just half of these, things would be much more positive I'd imagine. Without counting exactly, there are several games in there that were draws or losses - we're talking 10+ more points and top 8 instead of "getting relegated".

If we don't buy a striker this summer, it'll be more of the same.
