I'm not convinced about his strikers instincts which is mandatory for a top top number 9 but I don't think I've ever seen him stop trying at any point in a game. Tbf the same can be said of Maguire.

I think he'll come good but I wouldn't bet too much on it though. By come good I don't mean he'll be a bench player like lindelof. I mean there's a decent chance he'll justify the huge fee.

His instincts are fine

20 years old, first season at the club and in the PL and CL,
8 goals in 20 games despite being the least passed to forward in the league.

He's fine. He's starved of service.

I’m actually not that convinced he’s the hold-up sort of striker he was billed as before he came. The PL is a little too physical maybe. He’s a unit but not elite when he’s crowded out. Could maybe do with Berba’s touch or Fellaini’s chest. Explains a bit why he’s been better in the CL where he doesn’t get the same rough treatment.

His striking instincts seem good though and he battles constantly with defenders. Damn sight better than Weghorst and being young he’s got a season or two before we should be expecting regular good performances.

Are there many strikers anymore? Other than Haaland and Kane. A lot of the top scorers are wide forwards nowadays. So I'm not sure what to expect from Hojlund in this context.

I'm inclined to agree with Sid, which is also why I'm not keen on the 4231 line up.

He's 20 years old ffs, give the lad some time to develop. I love what I see from him, I think he'll be brilliant for us when he's developed some more and the team play into him more. It's not his fault the club paid so much for him and it does seem like he doesn't let that hang around his neck like a noose like Sancho did.

Fair point fatty. I wonder though to what extent he is hampered by being a lone striker, which seems to me to be something of an anachronism. Do you think he might benefit from being played as one of a pair of strikers, which I think is what Sid was alluding to?

He's a kid who's new to the league and is being asked to lead the line for a dysfunctional team with huge expectations and close to no mentorship, he obviously needs time.

His ceiling may not be high, but deserves to be part of the squad, especially when our only other #9 can play once every 6 months.

Which is still a few too many games he should be playing for us.

I feel pretty sorry for him, to be honest.

He knows he's not performing to a level we need to see and his confidence is on the floor.

He's a young man and we brought him in to do a job that you have to be exceptionally good at. There's no hiding place at United. He'd probably be great at another club.

Whether Hojlund and Zirkzee are good enough is one thing. But it's easy to forget that they're human beings.
