Bit left-field this one, but has anyone had a good experience with using one of the free website design products, such as Wix?
I'm toying with the idea of setting up a website but it seems that the 'free' offer is a bit of a con. Before you can get to the free design component it seems you first have to commit to paying a monthly fee to secure a domain. You can get the domain free for the first year but then the monthly charge kicks in at quite a hefty monthly rate.

I knew about this stuff 20 years ago in the HTML days but sadly technology has left me behind.

Fub, have you any ideas?

Not trying to start shit, but can you use AI to help make a website? Certainly produce some of the content.

Hi Sid, yes I'm assuming that the free templates vendors must be using AI, though I'm not sure.

For a start, I would, personally, avoid Wix like the plague because they are an Israeli company and i'm not much up for helping that regime right now. Squarespace are a competitor that are not Israeli based as far as i can see. I'm sure there are plenty others.

Registering a domain is an annual affair, not a monthly affair. I wonder if what you think is "securing a domain" is actually paying for the server/webspace in order to host what you create and probably also for them to host the "DNS records" which is how the world would be able to locate your site. I don't think you would actually need to purchase a domain through any of these services, nor would you need them to host DNS so you could likely save some money there by using a proper registrar (of which there are hundreds). You would still have to pay some sort of monthly website hosting charge though as that's the nature of the beast: you're using their tools and their servers so they'll be renting them to you.

I don't believe the stuff is AI driven. As far as i am aware, they are sort of prepackaged modular templates. As far as getting AI to code a website for you, that would be definitely within the realms of what it can do right now but, ultimately, it all depends upon exactly what you want and could rely a lot on you knowing how to ask for what you want using the right terminology. Not saying it will - i don't do web design so haven't seen what it can do but i have asked it to write code for me and, with a bit of debugging and/or persistence in saying "that doesn't work. i need it to do this" you can get acceptable results.

Thanks for the advice Fuß. First ran into Wix in Rwanda about 10 years ago but didn’t clock that they were an Israeli company. Thought they were from the US.
I’ll check out your suggestions.
One of the supposedly free template sites is quoting just shy of $100 a month for hosting a site.

That seems a lot, swamps. Could we enquire as to what the website is for? is it for e-commerce or something?

I'll need to check and get back to you. It was one that came up when I googled those that provide free templates.

I'm tending towards Square Space at the moment - wondered if anyone here had tried it?

my sister used it for a website to advertise a business and, whilst it was a bit of a learning curve for her, she got there in the end as far as i know.
