Also got to think someone doesn’t rate Amass. I don’t know enough about him and didn’t watch any of his football out on loan last season but to let him get down to his last year on his contract suggests we’re not particularly bothered about keeping him and will take a fee (hopefully with a sell on). That or we’re just making the same mistakes as we have before.
I think a lot of it was to do with his physique. Think they're more careful with sending them to the gym these days, they wait until they're 18-19. He looks like he's bulked up a bit but maybe it's not enough.nineteenninetynine wrote: ↑1 month ago Also got to think someone doesn’t rate Amass. Like you say, hopefully not making the same mistake as with Carreras.

It must mean we're confident on bringing in a new left back. The key thing with young players, is that there has to be a pathway to the first team in a well defined period of time. Say we're in the process of bringing in someone like Lewis Hall - having him and Shaw, plus the option of Dorgu there and Diego Leon in the youth ranks too - its a pretty stacked pathway. Letting Amass go makes sense, even for a low fee, IF there's provision made for both a reasonable buy-back clause and sell-on percentage.

Mistakes are made, but you have to trust the opinions of the elite coaches who work with him every day. Lots of very good players don't get to Utd first team level. One observation is that he looks very heavily left footed.
Well it all depends on the money you'd get for him and how much it would cost to find a replacement who can contribute as much to our build up play and passing game. If there's not an affordable replacement, and you'd just be losing that passing game, I don't think selling him would be a smart move.nineteenninetynine wrote: ↑1 month ago 45, 14, 32, 19 games per season for Martinez.
That’s why you can’t rely on Martinez. His injury record is not the best and whilst it’s not his fault that we’re in the hole created by years of poor decisions, we’re now running with a relatively small squad given the amount of football we’re playing and Martinez can’t be relied on in a small squad to be fit for long periods of time. Even in a season where we had no European football and went out at the first hurdle of both domestic cups, 19 games is a poor record.
Even in a bigger squad, you’re carrying players like him knowing he’ll break down.
Also, player's luck with injuries can change unless they're suffering from a chronic specific problem. Chances are you'd sell him for a low fee because of his injury record, then he'd end up staying fit at his new club. Don't sell on the lows and buy on the highs.

I’m no expert on FFP or whatever it’s called, but a fair whack of what we paid for him will be covered under those rules, so we would be unlikely to end at a “loss” for Martinez. I think, anyway, I could be wrong and someone else who gets it more may be able to provide an update.bman2 wrote: ↑1 month agoWell it all depends on the money you'd get for him and how much it would cost to find a replacement who can contribute as much to our build up play and passing game. There’s risks with every sale and every signing. Not selling someone just in case they suddenly get and stay fit for a sustained period isn’t enough of a reason to keep someone.
We’ve still got 4 years of Martinez as well, which significantly reduces the likelihood of him going as who is going to pick up the contract he’ll be on here? Especially given his injury record.

Its not the biggest problem for us to solve, but if someone were to offer 45-50m for Martinez, I'd take it. Mainly because of fitness concerns, but I'm also of the view that Martinez isn't at the level of a title competing CB in the PL. I'm not saying he's shit - he's not. His ball playing is class, and I've seen him have immense defensive performances, including pocketing Haaland. But he can be got at. We know what title winning CBs look like - Rio, Vidic, Bruce, Pallister, Stam. Martinez ain't at that level, his fitness record is a problem so if we can get our money back, we should. Defence is the next area of the team to rebuild.

Given his age, injury record, 2 years left on contract, I would estimate you would get £35M for him.
He averages 28 games per season.
The question becomes, if he was available on the market would you sign him on a 2 year contract for £35M for 28 games per season?
If no, now is the time to cash in and reinvest in a replacement.
28 games a season flatters him IMO because he stayed fit for the entirety of the first season.Remi Moses wrote: ↑1 month agoGiven his age, injury record, 2 years left on contract, I would estimate you would get £35M for him.

Since then he's averaged 21 a season.
Like bman says he could surprise us and be available for all 50 games next year but that feels a big stretch.

I’d be happy with about £25m so close from his deal ending.
