I agree on the 1st part - and disagree on the 2nd. 35 is just as ridiculous at 70m. We paid 25m for Dorgu, and he was much more raw, and unproven in PL.

In current market 50-55 would be a decent deal.

There's less will from the Saudis to spend money on sport due to the Iran war but also Newcastle have spent 450m since they took over. They're one of the league's biggest spenders.

I think it will take something like £65 + 10 in add ons plus Hall making it very clear he wants to leave - Tonali, Guimares & Gordon all did that to get their moves.

I'm not so sure. They have the funds due to frugality so far. It could be that LB is now seen as the most important position based on the drop off from 1st to choice to 2nd choice being greater than in CM. If LB is the priority position and there is a clear number one target, why not push the boat out? Shaw is also likely leaving at the end of the season. Hall could be a 10 year solution.

Agree that LB is probably now the most important position to fill. Aside from Shaw, we don't have a LB suited to how Carrick wants to play. Sure, we can get Maz or Dalot to cover, or play Martinez there but it'll affect the balance of the team. Can't rely on Shaw to stay fit for a 2nd season on the trot. £60m for Lewis Hall seems about right for what he has done so far and what his potential is.

After that, I'd say we still need a no.6. Mount won't give us 30+ games and we need to depth. Doesn't have to be a superstar DM, just someone with legs and the ability to shield the back line and be press resistant.

If Rashford stays and we don't sell Zirkzee (which doesn't look likely), we have plenty of cover for the striker position.

Journos in the know were saying yesterday that the word amongst agents is that United are "happy with their squad".

Either Hall is the last target and we're done (which would be worrying but a sign of where the budget is), or it's a negotiating tactic to add a bit on to players we'd be willing to sell whilst simultaneously not looking desperate and being taken to the cleaners like it looks like Spurs have been.

If we really are happy with the squad (which I don't honestly believe) then what's our starting 11 for most games? Yoro has being playing RB and there are whispers that might be his future, so does that mean Dorgu at LB so we're throwing one properly forward?

CMs are surely dependent on the opponent. Tielemans + Mainoo feels a bit immobile and Santos + Mount is surely a bit lightweight for the prem. Mount is guaranteed to miss at least 10 games, probably more like 20. Mainoo has his yearly injury. Tielemans had issues last season and has been playing first-team football since he was 16. As much as I'm excited to see what Carrick and his team come up with for CM, and we have to be frank and say there's a lot of technical quality amongst those four, surely a big lad who gets about is prudent. Chuck £40m at Fulham for Berge and see if they bite tbf.

As for the forward line, there are options but Mbeumo and Amad are bang out of form. Honestly coming round to the idea of Rashford. Think he could be what's needed to put a rocket up their arses, bit of genuine competition. If we sell him, then we need a player here to do just that IMO.

I’m not saying that I am dissatisfied by our business but it does feel a little like “is that it?” and I’m a little concerned. Look, I never expected Carrick to have a magic wand and to clear out all of the deadwood and then sign the best players in the world but the defence feels a little light and I’m not particularly interested in the reintegration of Rashford into the squad.

Maguire is probably on his last deal and it doesn’t look like there’s a succession plan if the new plan is to move Leny Yoro out to RB, we’re relying on the fitness of Shaw and Martinez to be reasonable throughout the season and expecting De Ligt to rise from his deathbed to be a mainstay in the side. Given the extra 8 games through the Champions League qualification, it seems wishful thinking to hope that Shaw, Martinez and De Ligt suddenly find fitness and retain a level of fitness across the whole season.
