I’d rip your hand off for top 5 if you offered it right now.
Pretty much what I'm thinking. Highly doubt there won't be big complaints from us on here about Carrick and certain players. Just hope it's not another "we're going to have to sack him" season.

Get into the CL again, beat a few rivals, double over 1 or 2 of them, cup run (maybe even win the League or FA Cup) would be the most achievable dream scenario.

More likely is we're going to have at least 1 phase of the season where it's not looking great

Not a bad deal. But given he won Championship keeper of the year, Bristol's player of the year, and Brighton have just got £22m for their young keeper sold to Coventry after a season in the Championship I still think we undersell our prospects. That said, if we've got a decent buy back and sell on clause, its a decent deal.

Honestly I think this was just a case of a Prem club paying vs. a Championship club paying.

Of course we can still get better at it, but I think it's unrealistic to expect it to become a strength. Brighton have mastered being this pipeline that hoovers up players and spits them out for profit. That can't be our model as we are a destination club. Even if we rejig the wage structure, we don't seriously want players to see us as a stepping stone, do we?

Liverpool, Madrid, Barca all suffer the same problem. They usually only turn big profits on players when it's another super club knocking or some mad transfer like Neymar.

Part of the reason Brighton make so much money from transfers is cos they regularly rinse Chelsea. They've made something in the region of 300m profit off Chelsea in 4 years. Eghbali & Boehly are the new Woodward. Absolute idiots.

Yes. There is a triumphalism in those fanbases, intoxicated by the spending sprees, but as rival fans we should welcome other teams overspending as they are mistakes that will come back to bite.

Chelsea have made about a £140M net spend so far and a close to their limit under Uefa rules. They are under big pressure to sell as they expected £300M of sales like last season. So far £155 + Garnacho.

The guardian are reporting that we've been offered Lewis-Skelly. Looks legit.

Instinctively dislike it. Don't want cast offs. If he was on our list already, fair fucks, otherwise run away from that one.

He's not the right type of left back as we need one who overlaps with a good cross. As a midfielder he's more interesting. It would be a bold signing imo, cause it would be Carrick going all in on a press resistant, control model. Claiming that an athletic DM is not necessary as the game model will prevent us from being overstretched and transitional.

For 35-40m I can see it. Would give us cover across both Left Back and Midfield, he's a good age, has some PL and CL experience. Given the market, it'd be a sensible buy and give us another year to look at a longer term left back solution. Probably by going back for Hall after Newcastle have a shite season and he agitates more to get out.
