Sir Alex Ferguson could be appointed to the House of Lords if two Manchester MPs have their Early Day Motion (EDM) read in Parliament. Labour MPs Tony Lloyd, Manchester Central, and principal sponsor of the motion Graham Stringer, Blackley and Broughton, have called for football to be more widely represented in the upper house, with Manchester United manager Ferguson the outstanding candidate for a Peerage.
The EDM does not mean Ferguson’s Peerage is guaranteed. Far from it, EDM 1926 is tabled for debate on an unspecified future date and may not receive Ministerial support, although it will remain open signatures for the duration of this Parliamentary session.
That this House recognises the economic, social, cultural and sporting importance of football to the United Kingdom; is therefore surprised at the paucity of representatives from the world of football in the Upper House; further notes that Sir Alex Ferguson, as the manager of Aberdeen and Manchester United, is the most successful manager in the history of British football; and calls for him to be recommended for appointment to the House of Lords.
Ferguson has been a long-term supporter of the Labour Party, dating back to his roots as a shop steward in the Glasgow docks, although the Scot’s closeness to the Labour government has led to predictable criticism of ‘Champagne Socialism’.
Ferguson was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1983, a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995 and then a Knight Bachelor in 1999, after United’s historic treble season.
FFS, he’ll be at home with all the other sell out champagne socialists, like Prescott
The House of Lords is ridiculous
Hereditary peers and all that total bollocks you Tory voters condone
sidney – whose the “you” I’ve never voted Tory!

love fergie hate phelan
What a joke. Fergie is an icon for our club, but to my mind he’s done nothing for the game as a whole and if you ask most non-United fans what they think of him, they loathe him. Yes it’s jealousy but my point is that if you exclude United fans, most football fans would laugh if you suggested that Fergie represents their interests as football fans.
At the very least, Fergie should not be made a peer until after he retires from Man Utd. And I have a feeling that once he retires from Utd, he’s not going to be interested in doing much work after – not to say that he wouldn’t accept a peerage (I bet he’d love it) but I can’t imagine him sitting in the HoL every day listening to many debates about healthcare or the price of fish.
Done nothing for the game as a whole???????????????
ha ha ha ha The most ridiculous football statement ever! Good one!
You say that as a United fan, and I’ve already acknowledged that he will go down as a United icon. But seriously, what has he done for the average football fan, particularly fans of clubs other than United? At least Sir Bobby Robson managed England.
What has Fergie got to say about rising ticket prices that are pricing fans out of the game? What’s he got to say about the leveraged buyout model that allows punters with no money of their own to buy football clubs? What’s he got to say about FIFA corruption?
He has done a fantastic job leading United to glory domestically and in Europe – and for that he is paid a wage that most of could barely imagine earning in lifetime, let alone a year. That’s his reward for what he does at United. Giving him a peerage on top of that would be ludicrous.
I despise Seb Coe but at least he’s willing to help Great Britain win the right to host the Olympics. Fergie doesn’t even want to help manage the GB football team.
hope he rejects this corrupted house of lords. it’s shame of england this nonsense as well as corrupted royals. fergie is socialist after all so i expect he’ll obviously reject this absurd offer, because it’s hard to imagine him spending time in company of these obscene ex-corporate businessman who are given lord status because of money they give to political parties, and in such way influencing laws who are convenient for they pathetic businesses.
He seems to be happy to spend time in the company of the Glazers, and I would rank them as being rIght up there with the worst dregs of the Lords.
