Manchester United’s sponsorship with AIG comes to an end this summer with AON taking the reigns from pre-season onwards. United’s players will wear the red home shirt just three more times – against Manchester City this coming weekend, Tottenham Hotspur at home on 25 April and Stoke City at home on 9 May. Not that it’ll stop the Glazer family trying to make a fast buck as this picture on ManUtd.com shows…
i see were you coming from but most teams and sports stores do this anyway, its not really anything out of the ordinary.
Yeah, sensationalist headline here. They have stocks remaining (as always) and are offering it at a sale price. No desperation – it’s standard business practice. Just like any clothes shop puts their out-of-season clothes on sale.
In my opinion, you are trying to make a story where none exists.
Now if only they had some ‘sharp’ ones left
yes cos glazers will bother with shirt promos. older shirts are just as wearable as current ones anyway.
I am afraid there are four games left.
Yes but only three in which the red home shirt will be worn. Sunderland away will feature a change strip.
It’s standard practice for any business with a line coming to an end. You don’t want to have out of date stock that you have to pay to store so you sell it cheaper to get rid of the stock.
Also considering you like banging on about the finacial situation you should probally make an effort to know the facts. The deal with Nike sees them being the ones to profit from shirt sales. Uniteds cut comes mainly from the upfront payment which is why boycotting merchandise would have no real effect on the Glazers (until the next deal atleast)
as already mentioned, this is a garbage post trying to make something out of nothing. As loathsome as the Glazers are, selling off season strips at a discount late in the season is standard practice everywhere, not some sort of desperate and pathetic money-making venture on the part of the Americans as you’re trying to make out. Go find a decent story to score advertising hits from.
Do you see any advertising on this site?! Duh
timbo, where are the ads on this site? And if the Glazers Promoting this shirt, normal or not we should hammer the bastards. Use it against them, infact use everything in the Arsenal we have against them. They Need To GO! ASAP! Anyone who doesn’t agree is a plastic southern who can’t accept facts.
@Andy
Its all well and good saying that, But there is no point forcing the Glazers out unless there is a better alternative on the table. The Red Knights business plan is ridiculous and anybody who backs them cant accept the facts. Their business plan involves leaving the 500million bond debt in place, which leaves us worse off than we are now. This is because, like it or not, the Glazers are good business men who have seriously increased revenues since their takeover. This is the only way of sustaining 500 million debt, and theres no gaurentee that the red knights would be able to continue with this. The only takeover worth talking about is 1 which would completely clear the club of debt, so until that offers on the table, we are wasting our time.
How about doing a topic the the red knights trying to place force the glazer 509m debt back on to united, instead of rubbish like this!
Makes sick to think green & gold campaign was a waste of time, if we going to still this debt.
How about you read the post from yesterday.. top of the “features” list.
So how is this any different from every other time the club knows that the sponsor is about to change and therefore every kit? It seems that people are getting a bit too desperate to find reasons to blame the Glazers. This is just what every single other team does. Crap article.
It’s wrong then too just as it was when previous regimes at United did this. But this is worse. This is profiteering. United put out an email, added it to “today at old trafford” on the website and put up a special article. As I said. Desperate.
Andy “timbo, And if the Glazers Promoting this shirt, normal or not we should hammer the bastards. Use it against them, infact use everything in the Arsenal we have against them. They Need To GO! ASAP! Anyone who doesn’t agree is a plastic southern who can’t accept facts.”
Why? Is a lack of an owner better than an owner that we know will keep the club successful enough to take a lot of money out of us? Or would you prefer the same amount of money going to British parasite like Harris and O’Neill?
But once again it’s not profitering because United don’t make a profit on shirts sold, it’s Nike who make the money on these. They are just trying to get rid of them so they don’t have to pay to store them
Ha sure. Yeah not a penny. If you’re that naive keep on believing that. The contract with Nike isn’t on purely fixed terms by the way. Of course if you think it is, you can point to the line payment in the accounts back to Nike for each shirt sold at the club shop.
No doubt believe the Glazers personally won us every trophy since 2005 too.
In addition, take a look at Real Madrid. They are claiming they have recouped the money spent on Ronaldo in shirt sales.
Well, the AIG logo looks absolutely terrible anyway. I’ve never liked the look of the shirt with that logo. The chevron V is actually OK in my book, but that AIG square ruins it all.
Bring on Aon and some new owners, and then I’ll consider one.
Wow Big Bloody deal. What does everyone want the Glazers to do, give them away for. It’s a business they are running not a charity organization.
I see lots of people are making a killing on the GG scarfs and hats. Why don’t must hand them out for free on match days courtesy of the Rich Red Knights, now that would be a statement GG scarfs with every supporter.
How strange that the Red Knights will be keeping the Bond issue as was taken out by the Glazers. How come MUST and it’s sidekicks arn’t in uproar about this. Keeping that means Glazers must have done something right.
Not so much something they’ve done right as something that’ll cost 120% of face to redeem before. How is it right to load the club with £500m of debt which will hang around for years after the Glazers have gone?
Scarves are on sale for £2.50 on matchdays from MUST at cost.
Makes business sense. Anyway, i think i must be the only pro Glazer fan around. Not that i care what others think. The Glazers MUST NOT sell the club to a bunch of sleazy business men who are taking advantage of the fans. I thought we wanted a debt free club yet the are telling us that they will retain the bond and leverage some part of the buy out money. what is the difference between them and Glazers. Rather the Devil you know. IGNORANT FANS are being taken for a ride. You must refuse
I have never bought a United shirt for myself with any logo on – always go retro. (Well I am friggin retro anyhow)
If AIG/AON/Sharp whoever want me to billboard their name on my chest – they should pay me.
Having said that I, like many other dads, have given in and bought the lad every new kit as it appeared. Can’t bluddy win can you.
p.s. The MUST scarves are a bargain if u buy outside Trafford House.
Problem is many street hacks are selling green-golds for a markup.
The cockney traders were ripping off the ‘fashionista’ outside Wembley LC Final.
LOL- so now the club should hold onto old stock and not do what every club and business in the world does. Bloody silly article
If 60,000 are left over (unlikely), just put them over every ST holder’s seat last game of season.
If just 2,000 put them on every Family Stand seat.
If a few hundred, give em to charity or drop em in a heavy armoured box over Anfield.
I dunno.
I do understand why you put this post up. Being a blogger myself, you so tempted to pick on every little detail and use it against the Glazer’s.
However, I do have to agree with most of the comments on here in that it’s a bit of a mysterious post. I will let you off though as you do have some quality articles 😉
I think this is just what normal retail stores do. Sort of like a end-of-season sale. It’s up to the fans to decide on what to make of it.
Me? Well I’ve stopped buying any official merchandise. Just my decision and it might not make a huge difference but with so many of us sticking together, why can’t we make a change.
I also see a lot of comments against the takeover of the Red Knights. The only real difference is that the Red Knights are fans themselves and they are proposing that us supporters have a slice of the club.
Other than that, the debt remains but these are business men and we know they’ll want to see a return on their investment just as the Glazer’s want.
The problem with the Green and Gold campaign is that it’s becoming a bit of a joke. So many fans are wearing them but are failing to realise WHY they are wearing them.
I see fans walking around with a Green and Gold scarf but with their red replica’s on. Isn’t this defeating the object a bit?
