For those Manchester United fans born in the 1970s or later, George Best is remembered predominantly in archive footage and countless YouTube video tributes. A remarkable man both on and off the pitch, Best retains the affection of millions despite – and perhaps because of – the many controversies in his life.
Five years on from his death, fans continue to remember the man who was both a genius on the pitch and larger than life off it. Now immortalised in bronze outside Old Trafford’s East Stand, Best’s stature is more than simply a player who made almost 500 appearances for the club. He is the embodiment of the club and a central tenet in its growth to worldwide fame and affection.
Enjoy the memories.

cheers Ed
a footballing genius unlike some of the twats of today
I’m sure there must be a lot of older United fans who watch the archive footage of this ridiculously gifted footballer and wonder what might have been had he stayed on the right track and not pissed it away.
Still, he won a European Cup which is more than most footballers will ever dream of – and he shagged a lot of girls throughout his life so he probably didn’t have too many regrets in fairness!
Aye 5 years and where are we? in a fucking buggers muddle of a mess.
He as far as i am aware he was( through MUTV) and the books i have read about him and others like Blessed.
Just pure genuis, i watched a game today on mutv, a fucking fouling cunt chopper Harris(chelscum)
tried to scythe him he rode the challenge.I just felt, thats a man!He went on to score, with class and a finnese.
Rest in peace with you George.
Mind he only scored 147 goals for United in 361 appearances in the league, so he was not that great. lol
He is a United icon.
Dont mention El beatle.
God blessed united fans with you, be good. look after him.
R.I.P.
gutted….i went the game versus portsmouth where all the shirts and tributes were put out……a very sobering and humble day….deathly quiet where all the tributes were adn very sad….we won the game 3 nil with ronaldo scoring….probably closest we’d ever get again to best
Whenever you talk about greatest ever player, it always comes down to Pele, and Maradona… I’ve never understood that myself.
I can’t say I was around to have watched them play… all my knowledge of these players comes from archive footage, and sports chat from their so called contemporaries.
I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that famous Maradona goal against England… excellent goal for sure… but just watch any “Best of Best” collection like the one above… he scores at least a dozen that are just as impressive… but… not against England in a World Cup…
Pele… World Cup winner, Brazil…
Maradona… World Cup winner, Argentina…
Best… a no hoper from Northern Ireland…
The “International Federation of Football History & Statistics”, ranks him 11th best European Player of the Century, and 16th World Player of the Century…
11th and 16th…
If he’d played for a higher profile internatation side… and won a world cup… where would he rank?
Like I said… Pele, Maradona, Best… I can only go by what I’ve seen in video collections… but based on that alone… Best was the Best.
for me Fat Ronaldo but that’s only cos of the generation thing and being into football when the guy was doing his stuff
