Today’s Daily Telegraph claims that Sir Alex Ferguson has been handed “substantial funds” to improve Manchester United’s squad this summer. The article is one of several in recent weeks suggesting that the club will spend heavily after more than five years of parsimonious ownership under the Glazer regime.
History suggests that Ferguson will be handed funds solely to buy younger players who retain a sell on value, rather than established stars. Yet, British newspapers continue to speculate that high profile signings will join United, including Inter Milan’s midfielder Wesley Sneijder, goalkeeper David de Gea and Roma’s Daniele de Rossi. The Manchester Evening News was even moved to claim Ferguson has £165 million at his disposal.
The stories may or may not be with foundation. What is not in doubt: the source of the rumours, with United happy to let speculation mount ahead of June’s season ticket sales deadline.
The question is – do you believe the spin?

The amount of names and articles I have read in just the last two weeks linking world class football stars to Manchester United is crazy. Its like we have a history under the Glazer of spending stacks of cash. There is no and I mean no track record to support this!.That Manchester United and the current custodians will do this.
I am just about at the stage of where I see a name linked, thinking whats the point of reading this drivel.
The point in the article is the critical point in all this window dressing, its coming up for the time to be asked to renew or purchase a season ticket.A false dawn on expecting, many big purchases, possibly a goal keeper and with a huge amount of luck an attacking midfielder, that can score goals on a regular basis.
They can’t spend what they ai’nt got. It may be a bit long winded, but i suppose really it would be better if thought of actually more like they was’nt going to take as much out as they normally do.
I’ve said for a while that i can’t see them giving Fergal a massive war chest, it doe’snt add up and is by far the riskier avenue to take. I just can’t believe they’d let him spunk all that crazy money, cozz if it goes tits up, where are we then?
He can barely walk these days and lost the plot years ago. What does’nt help is we have’nt got anyone to sell that would generate any cash……Rooney apart that is.
Fergies basically got a squad that needs a total over hauling. Wobbly gob is fucked, Giggs and Scholes are wanked out, Carrick and Fletcher are clearly not good enough,
Anderson plays well once every blue moon, Hargreaves will never see total match fitness again, and lets not go there with Evans, O’Shea and Gibbo.
I’d galdly see Fergie leave at the end of this season. And get Jose in, and get this fuckin mess sorted before it becomes irrepairable, and let him spend the cash.
‘anderson plays well once every blue moon’ bullshit. first season he was here he played with alot more freedom to get up the field and everyone was raving. then hargo got injured and he filled in as mopper up. this season hes been further up the field again and has looked the class player he is. then he got injured and this served as the perfect excuse for knobs such as yourself to jump on his back again.
‘Carrick and Fletcher are clearly not good enough’ this is the carrick who had the italian press drooling not so long back and the fletcher who was, up until recently, the messiah resurrected. great how a dip in form outs all the fickle fans.
and you want yose. well done fella. your officially outed as a sad, fickle, tabloid munching knob.
No… and I think you’re absolutely right about this trying to sell a few tickets.
I won’t be surprised if we spend 20/30mill, on 3/4 young players, like you said… and Fergie/Gill will no doubt spin that out as a decent amount of investment… but we all know that what’s really needed is 3/4 excellent players… and unless you get very lucky, you’re not going to get 3/4 class players for 20/30mill.
im not sure whats gona happen, they must know they have gotta spent to stay competitive, no success on the pitch means no cash off it
Itel – you see that’s just not true. Premier League top 4 / Champions League QF versus Premier / Champions League winners is not a huge amount different in revenue terms…. but probably a lot different in investment terms.
Ed, what concerns the Glazers is more than just prize money! Its more about public image, more about the brand, more success, and by success, i mean being winning trophies. These are the factors which drive the brand, and attract bigger sponsors for their new “Territory Specific” sponsorship portfolio, aswel as better terms with the Major sponsors, like AON and NIKE, when the time comes for renewal. More success, again in terms of winning competition, also drives up the valuation of the club, by making it more highly regarded. These are the factors that the Glazers will consider when deciding whether to invest big money
Bedsides… we really SHOULD win the league this year… and that sends the message that it’s not broke, no need to fix it… maybe just a couple of tweaks.
Think about it… if we win the PL this year… how can you tell Ferguson his team is rubbish?
what a bunch of whingers on here, some people are never happy, all you moaners don’t deserve to support such a great club. Trust in Fergie the king!
f bgfv sdf – I would suggest that it’s not Fergie people lack faith in. It’s the Glazers.
There are two odd factors for me in all this, involving the Glazer and the “spending spree” meant to be! On this forum as I write 162 people have voted on how they picture what the Glazer will invest in the team.7 written responses. On the News NOW site the fastest moving article.Sir Alex Ferguson preparing for a Manchester United spending spree with the Glazers backing. From the Daily Telegraph.A lie runs faster than the truth.
Keep up the good work Ed.Its a battle thats going to be difficult until the team suffers significant defeat.
Off to the Pub, with ma Sellick mates.
Even the Glazers must realize that if they don’t spend big this summer — they ain’t gonna have a cash cow to milk dry.
I would rather spend on youngsters with potential to be great…and of course some money on one megastar like De Rossi!
agree. so does fergie (“Where we are good is bringing through young players, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernández, so I don’t see why that should change”) unfortunately the majority of fans would rather us spend £50 billion on one player, so that they can wear a hardon all summer, and who cares if that player turns out like veron.
It won’t be £100M, nothing like it, but I could see us spending £30-40M max net, probably 30M. Glazers are businessmen after all and they now they have to invest to keep things ticking over.
I don’t like Fergie saying we’re looking for 2-3 targets, because one of those is a keeper. So even if we replace VDS with someone as good as him, that still only means 1 or 2 quality outfield players, and probably just 1 based on recent history. I think we need a least two top class midfielders and a good defender, in addition to a keeper, to make a noticeable improvement.
Clearly we need a more defensive midfielder as well as a more attacking one. To say nothing of the left side of midfield.
Oh fuck it why even bother thinking about it anymore. Wake me up when we buy someone.
Exactly with you. They’ll spend as little as possible to (hopefully) ensure they progress well in the CL and do okay in the Prem and cups. But everybody knows that they’re saving the Ronnie cash for Jose/Whoever.
think your on to something with defensive CM, a replacement for hargo and let cleverly/anderson battle it out for offensive position.
This idea that United are hoarding cash to spend when the new manager comes in, is daft as dirt.
Ferguson isn’t some shmuck, interim manager, holding the fort until the “real” gov’nor comes along… all you lot that are so positive Mourinho’s the man to take over… what do you think? Fergie is just fuckin around, till Mourinho’s done his stint at Real?… and when Jose is good and ready, then Fergie will make way? Bollocks!
“IF” Mourinho is to be the next manager of United… he’ll have to wait, until Ferguson is damned good and ready to pack it in… and until that happens, Ferguson will want the best team United have to offer him.
Ferguson only knows one way to manage… to win… right now his main target is number 19… and after that, I’ve no doubt that he’d love one more Champs league… if there really is this big “war chest” sitting around waiting to be used… who really believes he wouldn’t want to spend it… to build one more great team and make one more great push for his 3rd Champs cup?
£100+ million sitting in the bank… waiting for the next manager… have a fuckin word with yourselves.
The Glazers are NOT moral men! They may well spend some money on the team, if they think it suits their plan… but be under no illusion… they do not give a flying fuck what you or I think of them… and telling fans a complete pack of lies is only a problem if they think they can’t get away with it.
agree.. total bullshit idea that they would hold money back from fergie. if (IF) there is money, theyll give it fergie to get things in order for when he retires.
but what with the progress in medicine i reckon we can keep fergie at the helm for at least another 40-50years, by which time all the yose lovers will have grown up and realised better.
The Glazers are businessmen, they will put the drip back in to keep the cash cow alive- but only just! Fergie will be allowed a new keeper, plus one or two outfield players. Outlay £30-50m gross but only around £20-30m net.But the elephant in the room is that at any stage those plans can collapse, because Ferdinands back could go at any moment. In reality Utd need 3 new midfielders- playmaker, left winger and new Roy Keane. Utd will be lucky if they get one of those midfield players. The smart money is on Young and Rodwell because Villa and Everton need to do business. However as to the £165m in the bank- some will be for players, some for servicing the debt….. but most will simply accumulate in the bank account, whilst the Glazers milk what they can. Then about two weeks before the Glazers sell the club whatever is in the account will be squirrelled away before Utd supporters can raise the alarm
in answer to original poll, who gives a fuck as long as were winning?
another thing. if you want to show people how the glazers are fucking us, please stop all this whining about how much we spend (which like i say, is entirely irrelevent considoring our league position and current player potential) and say something about how it will affect the clubs ability to spend on transfers/wages once the fair play rules kick in.
maybe a comparison showing how clubs like shitty, chelsksi will die a lovely death and arsenal, barca and real (with their state sponsored, interest-free debt) will blow us out of the water. just a thought.
you gonna get raped
you gonna get raped
Promise??
hmm hmm mm…sweet allabbaaaaammmmmmaaaaaa
I don’t doubt that there will be spending this summmer, but I don’t expect any major players being signed. One goalkeeper and two midfielders perhaps. Expect Charlie Adams, Stekelenburg and Henderson. Not Adler, Sneijder and De Rossi.
“We have certain targets in mind at the moment anyway,” said Ferguson. “I think two or three will be fulfilled, there’s no question about that.
“The Glazer family have always been very supportive of our desires to improve the team.”
He added: “What we are good at is bringing young players to the club, like Chicharito for example.
“If you look at how, over the last six to eight years, we’ve brought in young players like Ronaldo, Rooney – okay, one was 17, the other was 18 – we’re good at that. I don’t see why we should change from what we’re good at.
“We will continue [to buy players], without question, and when the opportunity does arrive and we identify the right young players, that’s the way we’ll go.
“In the present situation, with the likes of Chicharito, I think we have possibly some of the best young strikers in the country.
“Danny Welbeck, who’s at Sunderland at the moment, is an excellent young prospect. And the boy Mame Diouf who’s at Blackburn is another good prospect.
“We’re particularly strong with young strikers at the moment for some strange reason. Sometimes it works that way.”
That sounds like Fergie is saying “no” to this discussion.
I expect De Gea, Defour or Rodwell and one other youngen plus the loanees back. That’s still some decent wedge spent but it won’t be the marquee names or the £100M spent that the papers are getting excited by.
“anderson plays well once every blue moon’ bullshit. first season he was here he played with alot more freedom to get up the field and everyone was raving”
No they was’nt, its wishful thinking.
“this is the carrick who had the italian press drooling not so long back”
No they were’nt. One decent performance against Roma and thats it. A player who never gets a look in for England, and is last in the pecking order behind the likes of Gareth Barry, James Milner and Scott Parker. Did’nt Pele himself say Nicky Butt was the best player at the world cup in 98. Say no more there then eh!
“fletcher who was, up until recently, the messiah resurrected.”
I can only suggest methadone. Its a long road i know, But don’t delay, do it today,
Its for the best.
have you actually watched any games this season? anderson has been plying out of his skin. carrick has done a decent job of gaurding the back four. fergie obviously thinks so because hes just given him a new contract. and what the fuck has anything pele says got to do with anything?
‘I can only suggest methadone. Its a long road i know’
from a bloke who thinks fergie should leave.. that wants mourinho instead. you must be speaking from experience on the meth. if not, try smack. i here its a far shorter road, no point dragging it out.
You clearly haven’t been watching, as Carrick is maligned left, right, and centre – by us, by the Beeb, the Gruniad, the Mail… Carrick has been slated over and over. This is what’s known as a “fact”.
He has got better of late though. But not worthy of the shirt he wears nor the number it bears.
Anderson been playing out of his skin? Erm. Okies.
Fergie has maintained he will spend big to replace the old guard
He’s mentioned it in interviews for years now
So if we don’t spend big on quality, top draw players to replace Van Der Sar and Scholes, then he’s talking shit
“have you actually watched any games this season? anderson has been plying out of his skin.”
Look! He’s done it again?
Either an attention seeker or dellusional to the point of absolute.
Your at the wrong stop, you want Red caf son.
not attention seeking just dont buy into all this ‘we need to axe fergie and spend billions on new players’ crap. but your right about something, im clearly pissing in the wind trying to get that point across on here. on that note ill fuck off and leave you to your mourihno loving, big-name craving, fergie bashing fantasies
Well, if we don’t spend we know we won’t be challenging for honours next season. This season was freakish, who would have imagined at the beginning that everybody would be crap, and that we could play just good enough, in some games, plus have our fair share of good luck when it really mattered (otherwise we would probably have been derailed some time ago) to be up there, going head-to-head with Arsenal: though we and the Gooners should not be have any illusions: we both have it in us to blow this completely, and let Chelsea in to take the title (which would be beyond contemplation).
I am worried that (a) we won’t buy or (b) we will buy but buy wrong, and worse, sell wrong. Limited as our squd is, I think there are some permutations that haven’t been tried that would make for a more coordinated attacking kind of football. If we are going to buy, it should be part of a full SWOT analysis by Fergie (if he is capable of such a thing — and I doubt it). And here I need to say that players who are too slow, can’t tackle or aren’t enough of a physical presence and have lost form simply have to go. Having them in the squad is a liability — particularly since Fergie appears to go into this mode where he believes they will suddenly recapture their best form. Look out for the final against City — who do have a physically strong midfield– who is he going to choose in midfield for this game: it’s self-explanatory and obvious: Scholes, Giggs and Carrick.
There are too many contradictory stories going around about how much we are going to spend who we are going to get. Maybe after five parsimonious years, Fergie has forgotten how to grab the big fish (and he is also going to second-guess himself with regard to their value) — and even if we do have big money and start flashing it around, Fergie may be so slow and unsure other clubs will beat us to the punch.
So my vote in the poll– and SURPRISE, SURPRISE its way in front with almost 50% of your respondents plumbing for it — was foe “I’ll believe it when I see it”.
Ted, I like your rantings. Very anti-Fergie but he’s tainted his legacy with his support of the Glazers and his Chelsea comment.
But I can’t see Jose Moanio coming next season. I heard he’s kissed and made up with Abramovich and he’s going back to Chelski – with £100 million to spend to get him the CL. And he’ll do it. Which is a shame because he’d win it for us if he came here. And before people go on about his lack of attractive football – have you seen some of United’s games this season? He’s not that dull.
A smart move would be to sell a few players that are not up to United standard and then he will have extra money to buy quality players. How many players should he sell and how much do you think he can make from selling these players? I can name six players that need to go.
Not so hastey brother! Yes, i do believe Fergies run his course and yes, i don’t like the fact he’s gargling on Malcy’s cock custard and snowballing with that fuckin slimey twat Gill. But you’ll hardly endear yourself to anyone with whoppers like “Fletcher’s the mesiah” and some other dogshit about Carrick being famed by the Italian press albeit 3 years ago. If you’d actually taken the time to read some of my posts, and you obviously have because you’ve noted i’m no lover of Fergie, then why you have’nt noted that i’ve actually championed us not spending fuck all is amazingly convenient.
The reason i’d like to see Mourinho here is because he’d attract top players, he plays the hacks like a violin, he oozes the arrogance needed to be United manager, he’d off load the deadwood like Carrick, O’Shea, Anderson, Evans, Owen. And he’d sort the situation out with Scholes and Giggs which Fergie inexplicably refuses to do, which should have been done 2 or 3 seasons ago. So they’re playing from memory, Ferdinand is fucked, and Van der Sar and Neville have jacked in. Thats why Carrick and Fletcher have been awarded new contracts, not on merit, but because there’s no cunt else coming.
And that is very wrong and Fergies fault. No value my fuckin arse!
okay so messiah was an overstatement. and carrick is never going to be a keane or a scholes. but deadwood? theyre both versatile, set a decent example to the younger players, and they wont cry about being left out. perfect squad players for me.
as for anderson, you say get rid of cos hes hit and miss, hes 22 ffs. rooney was hit and miss at 22. so was ronaldo. shit players theyve turned out to be eh? same applies to evans.
and as for the fergie bashing, he was written off the last time he rebuilt the team, only to win three titles (should have been four) on the trot. thought those fans would have learnt better. obviously not. and arrogance has got fuck all to do with managing united. its the very reason he shouldnt get a sniff. and i havent read any of your previous comments. just saw your comment, thought you were full of shite, and replied.
but you might be right. you, the ed, pretty much every blog there is all shouting about how the team is fucked, and that unless the glazers spend £100m this summer were properly fucked. peddling the tabloid scare stories might put wind back in the sales of the green and gold campaign and thats great. but personally i dont believe a fucking word. not with ando, nani, rooney, hernandez, smalling, evans, cleverly, da silvas, valencia, wellbeck, all getting better and more consistant over the next few years. fergie recently said players come good around 24-25. he was right with rooney so how about giving him and the younger players a chance ffs.
im not saying we should give the glazers an inch. like ive already said, once ffp rules kick in, and all our profits are getting swallowed up by the debt, and fergie or whoever else is left with fuck all for wages or transfers, thats where were fucked. so i really dont see any need for any of this scaremongering bs. i like to think our fans can see the tabloid bs for what it is, and still want that glazer fucks head on plate. delusional, maybe, wrong stop, probably. once the meth is done i can rant this shit to myself instead.
I’m tired of this reasoning. We do not want to become like Arsenal and their young has beens ok? The football on the pitch is so dire, it makes me puke just thinking about it.
“The reason i’d like to see Mourinho here is because he’d attract top players, he plays the hacks like a violin, he oozes the arrogance needed to be United manager, he’d off load the deadwood like Carrick, O’Shea, Anderson, Evans, Owen. Thats why Carrick and Fletcher have been awarded new contracts, not on merit, but because there’s no cunt else coming.
And that is very wrong and Fergies fault. No value my fuckin arse!”
This is exactly the type of argument I have a real problem with.
First of all… no manager has a better reputation than Fergsuon as far as players go… most of the great players that have played for him, have nothing but glowing praise for the “father figure”… Robson, Bruce, Sheringham, Ince, Cantona, Blanc, Shmikes, Beckham, Cole, Ronaldo… etc… given the opportunity, Ferguson can attract any player willing to play in Manchester.
No one plays the media better than Ferguson… Mourinho would tell you himself, that half of what he does, he copied from the “Boss”.
The idea that Mourinho would make these sweeping changes if he were in charge… I’ve no doubt that he’d want to… but then again… so would Fergsuon a few years ago… and that leaves me wondering what has happened to the ruthless cunt that Ferguson once was? Is it really that he’s just gone soft… or is he forced by financial limitations to make do with what he’s got?
Fergies new mantra, of “no value”… you’re damn right that’s a crock of shit… but again… when did Ferguson become so concerned with what it costs to build a winning team?
We may never know for sure what has been going on in the United head offices since the Glazers took over… so you have to make up your own mind who’s responsible for the team we have, and signings we have or haven’t made… for my money, I’ve got absolutely no problem at all, putting the blame squarely at the Glazers door… not Ferguson.
“Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching’ tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
Fergie rarely ever attracts established talent. He might mentally over power young players but he can’t control the true characters unless they are wimps like Carrick and Fletcher.
Hughes, Ince, Stam, Beckham, Ruud, Forlan, Veron, Keane, Tevez, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho FFS.
He is slowly surrounding himself with yes men now.
Them players indeed always give Fergie a good word. But that was then Alf, and then was a long time ago. The Glazers, cunts that they are, are not the ones that brought Owen in, they did’nt give Carrick and Fletcher new contracts. He alone could have stopped them cunts taking over our club and there’d be none of this shit now. I just can’t forgive the fella for selling us out, and actually rubbing our noses in it.
Does not seem too difficult to translate.
“We are good at bringing young players through”. Suggests a maximum spend of £15m on any player. So no Sneijder-too expensive & too old.
“I think think two (or three) will be fulfilled”. Suggests a GK (De Gea) plus one CM (probably Rodwell) & possibly a CB if he does not think Evans is up to it. Cahill too expensive so they will have tracked a CB probably in Europe.
But that’s two different arguments… I’m just as pissed off at Ferguson for his weird allegiance to the Glazers… makes no sense to me at all.
But that doesn’t mean that he’s to blame for all our problems… it just means he’s trying to work around them… that’s my opinion anyway.
I mean, Mickey Owen is a perfect example… 5/10 years ago, Fergie would never have wasted time on an over-the-hill player, who’s crocked more often than not… BUT… he was free… what does that suggest?
And the contract to Carrick is the same… don’t ask why he’s given a contract to Carrick… ask why he hasn’t replaced him full stop?
Again it’s just my opinion, cause we don’t really know…but everything suggests to me that Ferguson is working within a strict financial framework, that doesn’t give him the freedom to be as ruthless as he used to be… in other words… he’s got no fuckin money, and he’s having to make do…
“Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching’ tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
I’m perfectly happy not spending huge ammounts this summer. Get us a quality GK, and some young good talent in the midfield area. We don’t really need to spend £100 m on Sneijder, Bale, Young and so on. With our young players coming back from successful loans, and a few quality additions, I think we’ll be winning next year. Let’s not be City/Chelski fans and shout for our owners to dish out truckloads of cash. I don’t particularly like the Glazers, they’re like a bad cold you cant get rid of, but it’s not all doom either. When the day comes that Fergie actually retires (God forbid), I’m sure he will have left a legacy of quality young players with an experienced backbone for the new manager.
Sell bad players and buy good ones? Fuck me, that’s just crazy enough to work.
I get what you’re saying and I partially agree… but we’re not SUPPOSED to be a midtable team that’s looking to impress with our academy, and making a DECENT team of world class youngsters.
We are Manchester United, and our ambition is SUPPOSED to be, to compete with the BEST teams in the world… bringing through kids is great… and you hope that every once in a while one of them meets the standard… but at a club like United the standard is SUPPOSED to be very high… so high that very, very few kids make it…
But it’s gotten to the stage where all we’re doing is buying kids in a scatter-gun approach… and that’s because it’s economical. Buy 10, keep 2/3 and the rest get sold on… while the teams with real ambition and real money are buying proven stars… and VERY IMPORTANTLY, respecting their fan base…
United is resting on it’s reputation right now… we used to be known world wide as an exciting team, with world class attackers… Real, Barca, the Renties, and even the Bitters… that’s where the action is now for new fans, or the fickle fans who follow players more than clubs… how many fans did United lose when Ronnie left?…Now many more will we lose if Rooney fucks off? And how much longer will we be the favoured team of millions around the world if we keep playing this rubbish football?
United is not honouring the fans anymore… it’s just taking the piss out of them… and eventually, the fans will say enough… and that’s when the Glazers will fuck off… taking a world class profit, but leaving a second class club.
I know we fans want some marquee signings, and I would be a happy camper if we opened our wallet and got someone like Sneijder. Unfortunately, we’re in a postition where our debt will affect our ability to buy, but also the huge wads of cash being thrown around by the neigbours and the two supremos of la liga will inevitably mean that we will have to pay more for established talent.
I am with you in regards to fickle fans though, the football this season hasn’t been thrilling, and watching Barca would honestly be a better use of two hours time. I’m not a Glazer fan, but they are businessmen, and they must surely know that without quality players (doesn’t necessarily mean £40 mill), good football and being able to hold talent the fans will eventually loose patience. If they want more money out of United, they will have to invest.
Should be very interesting to see, come August, if they open their checkbook for some marquee’s, or if we’ll have another summer of Smalling’s, Chicha’s and Bebe’s (Let’s be honest, two of those look like potential world class, and you know which 🙂
Do people actually believe he rates Carrick? He’s seen Robbo, Keane, Ince, Scholes, all running the show, and now we have Carrick. Ferrari’s and fuckin milk floats me thinks. And as much as i think Fletch is an honest pro, he just never seems to command an automatic place. Anderson apart from the odd decent show does’nt look like he can hack a regular 90 minutes cozz he struggles with his weight. The money has long gone in my eyes.
Carrick. 18 million.
Berbatov. 30 million.
Hargreaves. 17.5 million.
Anderson. 13 million.
Bebe. 8 million.
Obertan. 3.5 million.
There is some pretty serious money there, and in all honesty it does’nt make great reading. Can we really say……..(A) We have had our monies worth, and …..(B) Would we get anything like it back? Allied with Scholes and Giggs only going to be playing cameo roles next season and Vander Sar and Neville packing in, its hard to see how we can move forward. The money has been spent. I cant see anyone giving Fergie a war chest. No value? we could have had Van der Vart and every season ticket holder a fish supper for what we paid for Bebe!
Naahhh! I can see the gimp sitting tight and playing the waiting game. Especially amid stories that their relationship is extremely strained, and Gill is just the messanger between them.
You can say what you want about the money spent… but don’t forget, the Glazers PROMISED £25mill a year for players… and I doubt Ferguson has spent even half that much… and that’s not even counting the Ronaldo money.
Based on these guys: http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/manchester-united-transfers.html
If we DON’T count Ronaldo, our average net spend over the past 6 seasons has been about £16M. If we do count Ronaldo, it’s less than £3M on average per season.
For the Arse it’s an average of around £3M a season as well. Chavs are around £39M. Spurs nearly £19M. Man Shitty average of £61.5M (about £110M average over the past three seasons…)
On that basis the Arse and ourselves deserve credit for our PL positions at the moment.
When you think that Fergie has taken a team that came 3rd in in the league in the 04-05 season, spent an average of £3M over the next six seasons, and won 3 PLs, 1 CL, another CL final, plus some carlings and came second in the PL last season by 1 point and are in the lead currently, it’s fucking amazing. Anyone who says Fergie is losing his touch is mad — in pure management terms the Glazer era might be his greatest accomplishment. Imagine he’d had more money to spend — what would we have won then?
You,re right! I said that before. We don’t need to spend millions on players. We can buy world class quality youngsters at prices we can afford and we will be a force to reckon with. But please, no more Bebes.
You can definitely applaud Fergie for making the most of his raw materials. However he could have spent more if he wanted. Not the same amount as in the early 2000s, but still more.
He bought in Bebe, Smalling and Hernandez last season, Valencia, Owen, Diouf and Obertan the season before. Each season’s total has been around 25 mill. He is going for the squad route as opposed for the strong 11. Its his choice. He probably could go for a marquee name every other season, in the past it was every season.
Its all interesting anyway, the thing is do United need to bring in many squad players in anyway, they generate plenty of those calibre players through the youth system. Obertan, Diouf and Bebe are clearly not any better than Cleverley, Macheda and Welbeck.
Lost faith in Bebe already Herbie?
United reportedly going to buy Ashley Young for 25 million pounds. 100k pound a week.
Jeez, remind me why I started supporting United. Quite sure NOT to see idiots being accumulated in one place.
25 mill for 100k a week – I very much doubt. No value there!! 15 mill for 60k a week is more like it.
damned if you do, damned if you dont Bill …
wanker A says – we have no money because we dont spend any money. ok.
wanker A says – we should not spend money because likes of Young is too expensive. ok.
so we should not spend money if someone is too costly but if we don’t spend money then that means we don’t have any, so the club must be going down the toilet.
but hey, Torres for 50m, Barry, Toure 1, Toure 2, Tevez, Dzeko, Klov, Adeb, Robinho, Bent, Lescott, and Balottelli represents value in the market?
Oh hang on Carroll at 30m?
With the kind of shit that has been going on in the last 12 months, caution is best.
– no doubt that we will buy english talent and young players.
– the goaly will be good but not a spectacular marqeuee; casillais type shit.
– any overseas players will be rough diamonds plucked from obscurity unless its a scani who love english clubs and would come to play at OT
key is to win number 19 and get to semi of UCL; that will be a huge pull for likes of rodweel and young plus said quality goaly
am not saying contenintal talent is impossible but i just doubt pastore type quality that has already been discoverd and of a high profuile wld come to united – its all about barca and real, the rest get the leftovers unless you can grow a gem domestically – which is wht Fergal is doing.
Yep I think though if Young was available for 25 mill at 100k wage then United would pull out and let some other mug pay it. At that point Douglas Costa might become a more viable option.
You can see the thinking behind the spending policy and after being stung on Hargreaves/Berba the Gimps will be telling Gill to cut out the 30+ mill signings. On that basis Young/Rodwell + MN/MS isn’t a bad haul if we get them.
What we don’t want is a poorly researched impulse buy like Bebe. Hernandez was scouted very thoroughly before they bought him. To be honest if United aren’t sure on a foreign signing they shouldn’t bother. United will always bring solid squad players through the youth ranks.
I think if we come up with 3 good signings in the summer then that will have to be acceptable. They will get more leeway if we win the league that’s for sure.
spot on about Bebe, I said he was shit when he started and he has got shitter. what a joke – a complete impuse buy just because arsenal and chelsea were linked to him. at the value brigade conveniently forget that we spunked 10m in the toilet for him.
research, being smart, savvy and not being sucked in by the hype that the media and some of our dumb ass fans demand.
splash the cash in a controlled and intelligent manner otherwise, bring on the youth.
I’m sorry, paying 25 million for a Bellion Mark II is suicidal. Unless of course we are building a team that should be called Bebe and his Bouncers, then Young will be perfect no?
Pathetic shit. How I miss the days of Beckham and Ruud.
haha. totally agree.
vlad, kramer – come on then, what are your alternatives?
If we don’t spend, apparently we have no cash.
If we spend, then we need value.
But apparently there is no value, or is there?
Come on help us and Taggart out?
A value for money signing that does not play at shitpool, chavs, le arse since they would not sell – and don’t tell me you are both the type of numpties who really think the likes of messi, ineista super-marquee signing would come to united or be let go by guardiola or moanyho.
Oh hang on let’s just wind the clock back in your world where Darth Vader rules and Hobbits roam the land.
Fuck up.
Who the F is vlad?
That’s exactly the problem. No marquee signings have ever chosen to come to United. At least not in recent memory. In fact, we let our marquee stars go to clubs like Real Madrid automatically surrendering our pedestal to them.
At this rate, not long before we begin calling ourselves massive just from memory.
Get a grip, shit football with shit footballers is nonsensical. But whatever, I’m too far away to buy a season ticket anyway. So I don’t have to pay to watch this drawl that United put out every week.
