Paul Scholes makes a welcome return as Birmingham City visit Old Trafford this afternoon. The 36-year-old playmaker has missed almost two months action with a groin problem but start for Manchester United’s second fixture with the Midlanders inside a month. With Manchester City in action this evening, United can move three points clear in the Premier League with victory over Alex McCleish’s outfit.
However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson must compensate for Rafael da Silva’s absence at right-back, with the 20-year-old defender serving a one-match suspension following his dismissal against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. The Brazilian escaped further censure after an FA hearing on Thursday handed the defender an £8,000 fine and a warning about his future conduct following an angry reaction to Mike Dean’s decision at White Hart Lane.
John O’Shea, who played for the reserves during the week, Wes Brown or Fabio da Silva could come into the side in Rafael’s absence.
“Replacing Rafa is something I’ll have to consider, plus one or two other changes,” Ferguson told the press on Friday.
“Fabio could possibly come in. John O’Shea and Wes Brown are back in training and played for the Reserves, so they’re both available. Other than that, everyone is OK.
“Paul Scholes played an hour in the Reserves and he was on the bench at Tottenham. I was ready to put him on before Rafael got sent off.
“The Birmingham games in the last few years haven’t produced a lot of goals. Hopefully we can change that trend. Our home form has been very good this season, and it has to be now. It’s kicking on time.”
Rafael’s loss is a measure of the progress the 20-year-old has made this season, with the Brazilian now a permanent fixture in Ferguson’s side, prompting Gary Neville’s likely retirement in the summer. Wes Brown is also set to move on in 2011 but Ferguson has ruled out any departure on loan this winter.
However, Scholes’ return boosts United’s creative options, which were conspicuous by their absence at Spurs last weekend. Superb defensively, United created just four shots on target against the Londoners. Ryan Giggs is also likely to play, with the Welshman confirming he is seeking another year’s contract with the club.
Another key creative outlet could return to Ferguson’s squad in the Spring, with Antonio Valencia making good progress on the long road to recovery from a broken ankle sustained in September.
“Antonio is doing well now, he has started his running programme and he’s out with the physios every day, which is a big step forward,” said Ferguson.
“He’s been given the all clear from the doctors, so he’s under our complete control now. That’s great news.
“I think possibly towards the end of February he should be back in the first team squad. That’s a big boost to us.”
Ferguson will resist the temptation to rest Wayne Rooney though, despite the player’s continued below-par form. The striker misplaced 50 per cent of attempted passes against Spurs and has scored just one goal from open play all season.
Meanwhile, Birmingham City arrives in Manchester having not scored at Old Trafford for 30 years and lost nine times in a row at the Theatre of Dreams. But McCleish’s outfit earned a point at St. Andrews on Boxing Day, with Dimitar Berbatov scoring United’s only goal before the home side secured a controversial late equaliser.
For Birmingham, Cameron Jerome and Sebastian Larsson are available after both missed last weekend’s derby with Aston Villa. And Ben Foster returns to Old Trafford for the first time since his £6 million move south in the summer. However, key defender Scott Dann has been ruled out through injury until the summer.
Should United avoid defeat it will stretch the club’s unbeaten Premier League run to 26 matches, across two seasons. United is only the seventh in top-flight history to remain unbeaten after 21 league matches. Nobody at Old Trafford will countenance a change in that record today.

Great, but expect a lot of pissing, moaning and general gnashing of teeth from one Nigerian lunatic… even if Scholes has another good game.
Maybe we should play Rafael in fabio’s shirt?
You have gone far down in my estimation by that statement Alfie. Right through the floor.
Looking forward to the return to the team of someone in his mid 30s is very foolish and very sad. We should be able to beat Birmigham INSPITE of Paul Scholes. Over the hill he is inspite of what you think.

rooney’s finishing was appalling but otherwise he was really good
berbs was amazing only ruud and shearer have scored more hatricks now
fabio was outstanding – evra mark II and fast as fuck
Roo is kaputski…sell him to the highest bidder
nice 5-0, why does Berba get his goals in clusters, if he could do it every week he would be outstanding, well played united, will Rooney score ever again for us lol.
just finished work for a week , nice, beer time lol, 5-0 excellent.
As i didnt see the match ,who stood out for united today, apart from Berba.
My point exactly!! People will try and use his stats to tell stories when in reality he has gone more games without scoring than his stats will tell. And in a big game away from Old Trafford when we need him he will go hiding.
Could not believe Rooney missed that header.
Fucking hell, another hatrick
Missed the match, but apparently Giggs was class?
Another one of those vintage performances that Cal appreciates
He always puts in god-like performances when he’s after a new contract
Sarcastic sod…but true
Stats don’t tell you everything, mate. His all round contribution to games is much, much better. Even when he’s not scoring he always looks like the likeliest player to make something happen with a simple pass. He holds the ball much much better and is difficult to knock off.
I say all this as someone who used to be extremely critical of the player. He has definitely stepped up this season. He should be praised, not blasted.
There is simply no pleasing some people. The next thing you will be saying is that Giggs was shit. Oh wait, were you even there?
Yeah, whatever…
Look, if you can’t wind your neck in… even though your talking nonsense… expect people to take shots at you.
Sheesh is right, FFS, Cal if you can’t get your home form right what chance have you got away. I don’t buy it that he wont improve his away form and besides – it’s not as if anyone else on the pitch other than Rio and Vida – and VDS to be fair, is great away either.
Can we be friends again after our little ding dong?
Oh, you are pulling that “were you are the game” chestnut? Great.
Berbatov needs to do it for us during the many big games we have away from Old Trafford this season. He has all the silky touches and all that you say but believe me, I doubt if ANYONE here will hand on heart expect him to pull us through a sticky part away. He is our record signing for God’s sake and this is his THIRD season. He should be doing it away and even more consistently at home.
Once again, we are all entitled to our views. Giggs played well and scored a really difficult chance. Would I have him start the next game if we had everyone available? NO!Sue me!
Oh, you are pulling that “were you are the game” chestnut? Great.
_________________________________________________________________________
Yes, Cal, because you tend to come up with some strange observations at times.
Off the top of my head, Berbatov was magnificent against Everton away earlier in the season, lest you forget. Nobody talks about how well he played that day because we threw away 2 points. Nor is he to blame for late goals conceded away at Fulham or late on at Birmingham or our home game v West Brom.
The simple fact is you wouldn’t be complaining at all if we had won these matches because we would be miles in front of the chasing pack.
As for Giggs, he was one of our better players against Spurs (almost setting up a last minute winner) and he played well against Liverpool.
It will be difficult to keep him in the side if Valencia and Nani are fit but, with injuries and suspensions to come, it’s difficult to keep a good man down when he’s playing well. Giggs will have a role to play and I’m happy enough about that at present.
Give it up Sheeshy.
Cal will never, ever concede that he’s wrong… Berbatov, Giggs, and Scholes could win every MotM award, between now and the end of the season, but if on the last day, they have a shite game… there would be Cal saying… “SEE, I told you they were rubbish.”
he’s spot o about berbatov
No he’s not.
who wouldn’t play well when the rest of the teams flying and we’re at home and the opposition have bottled it at the thought of playing utd on a nice breezy day, its typical him, one goal for us in three seasons againsst arsenal or chelse, the third in a 3-0, thibnk his only goals for us in the champions league wre v celtic and aalborg, don’t remember him ever scoring against city, can only remember one v spurs, the fifth in a 5-2, its fuckin embarrassing, he lives off that one liverpool game
So says another Ranter who needs to start watching United matches instead of living off statistics.
Stop hiding behind statistics and look at what he actually brings to the game FFS. He has actually been outstanding in games where he hasn’t scored – but I wouldn’t expect you to know this because you’re a fucking idiot.
This is the same tiresome nonsense ABUs used to come up with when Ronaldo was playing well.
“He doesn’t perform in big games”.
Then he started scoring in big games, so they quietly fucked off.
If Berbatov scores against Arsenal/Chelsea, will you kindly do the same?
double standards, rooney plays great and don’t score and cunts on here say sell him knowing full well what he’s capable of, different story for berbatov tho, even tho he’s shown nothing to say we can rely on him and openly admits to feeling pressure about the fucking pricetag
the ‘performances’ line don’t wash with berbatov cause all it takes is the odd first touch for people to convince themselves he’s had a great game anyway, whereas we’ve actually seen rooney run games without scoring, and not on a suny nday day at home to bottling riff raff
LKHF
faffing
Rooney set off the pressure cooker under his own arse when he made public what he thought of his team-mates and questioned the ambition of the club. He is rumoured to be earning £250,000 p/w. If you think you’re so much better than everyone else, Wayne, go out and prove it. At the end of the day, you live by the sword you die by the sword. Since he signed that contract, what has he actually done to prove he is a player deserving to be the top earner?
If somebody holds the club to ransom the way Wayne did, damn right the fans should get on his case until he pulls his finger out of his arsehole and starts performing.
Even then, if you actually bother reading posts on here properly, you will see that it’s a question of performances rather than goals. Granted, Rooney played well today but he was absolutely atrocious last week and rightly criticised.
What you’ve just written about Berbatov shows that you’re incapable of appreciating what he is actually capable of bringing to a game.
The way he plays everyone else in and contributes to our attacks (adds fluidity to our attacks), the way he retains possession of the ball in tight spaces, his overall intelligence.
Last season, he was one of the top players in the Premier League for assists.
I say all this as someone who was at one time extremely critical of Berbatov and wondered whether he’d ever cut it at United. He has been outstanding this season even in games where he hasn’t scored.
I await your reaction if and when he scores against Arsenal/Chelsea.
Bollocks… I’ve never turned on Rooney… excellent contribution, whether he scores or not. And if we’d only had the previous two years to go by, I’d be condemning Berbatov as well… but this year, he’s been doing the business… bitch all you like, but him and Rooney are finally starting to form the partnership he was bought for.
FFS… he deserved the criticism when he wasn’t contributing, but he’s been one of our best players so far this year… period… and now that Rooney’s getting his game back, along with Berbatov and Nani, our attack is looking well menacing again… along with our solid defense… all we need is for our midfield to hold its own and we may even win a trophy or two.
Fuckin hell Mate… stubborn cynicism is the Knobby way, but credit where it’s due… or you sound just like Cal.
sheesh, youve bollocked me for using stats then bring up that assist shite, no one cares how many assists he got last, when it came to the crunch and we needed him v chelsea and blackburn he gave performances befitting his utd career
all that great at keeping the ball and first touch and retaining possesion and fluidity guff sounds great on paper except on the pitch it almost always constitutes him slowing us down and eventually doing nothing, again, except on the sunny day occasions at home to prem riff raff
I am more surprised that Nani isn’t taking more abuse for his final ball yesterday. It was chronic. So many pundits saying that Giggs playing like he is 17 again. Strangely, I remember Giggsy couldn’t cross worth a f*ck when he was that age. Now he is just an absolute legend.
Best news of the day is the Fergie had the sense to get shot of Foster. “Foster, give us a save”. Classic chant.
A good win, helped the goal difference and some nice football played at times.
that’s a given, at least you wrote something that is reasonable and based on commonsense – the classic legal argument, two different interpretations but both can be reasonable
Good post – criticism when due but to lambast the top EPL scorer when we are ahead on points, GD and games played – and when Rooney is playing reasonably well, is just madness.
Knobby you are just bitching because Dongliesh won but then Berba ruined your day by destroying Birmingham. Bet you are also pissed off that Gerrard did not play and that the only scouse scorers were non-English. don’t worry, Chelsea are playing tomorrow so you can see Ivanovic carry that injection ridden cunt Terry again in defence.
I have used statistics, Knobhead, more to make a point that there is more to Berbatov’s game than simply scoring goals – whereas I’m criticising your use of statistics because 1) you’re nitpicking his goalscoring record (even though he is top goalscorer) when we’re barely past halfway through the season; 2) you’re using statistics to criticise him and failing to recognise his all-round contribution to the game.
It’s now something of a myth that Berbatov slows our game down – and this once again leads me to believe that you haven’t watching our matches this season. A fit and firing Berbatov adds fluidity to our attacks, far from slowing us down. He picks up the ball and will set something up for other players. He doesn’t even need to sprint half the time because his passing is so good. His dribbling is as good as anything I’ve ever seen off Rooney.
Watch ALL of today’s game against Birmingham and tell me he slowed down our attacks. You will moan that Birmingham don’t count because they’re crap away from home, rather than objectively analyse his performance.
I’ve already cited Everton away as an example when he turned up at a difficult away ground, played well and scored.
I’m sure once Berbatov scores against a big side like Chelsea, City, Arsenal or Liverpool you will find another stick to beat him with. It’s pathetic.
I can understand that people might be pissed off that it’s taken us 3 seasons to see anything close to Berbatov playing well on a relatively consistent basis but, for heaven’s sake, give it a rest.
Giggs was awesome!!
Makes up for his performance vs. Stoke which was dire.
Yes Brian… Giggs was awesome!!
“Da iawn”.
I find it quite amazing how easily some people flow with the crowd so that they can make cyberfriends. Until he starts doing it consistently and when we are on the back foot, despite his lopsided goals record, I still count Berbatov as a waste of money!! Sue me people.
He slows our game down Sheesh. That is my view and I wish you and I can sit together while a game is going on. He holds on to the ball far too long and is slow on the ball. I will say it again, he has fantastic skills and all round technique but for our team as it is currently constituted and because we got rid of Tevez for him, we got a bad deal. How many of you here will back him to get us through a sticky situation away at Anfield/Emirates/Stamford Bridge? What does it say of him when he does not start our biggest fixtures? We lost the league last season because he bottled it as usual when Rooney got injured. Now he scores against Blackburn and Birmingham and we are hailing him. Rubbish. He did score a fantastic hattrick againt Liverpool and I was very impressed. THAT for me was the best match I have seen him play for us BUT we were at home. I know he did score a fantastic goal at Goodison but I do not remember his all round play being what Sheesh is trying to make it out to be.
At the Hawthorns the other day and we were chasing a win who was hurled off? Yes Berbatov. At Spurs last weekend who was hooked again for another striker to come on? Yes, him. Who did not even get a game when Arsenal came calling? What does that say about him really?
I do not come on Rant to be friends with any one on here. Frankly, you can ALL go to hell for all I care. However, I call the game as I see it. You are allowed to disagree with me. So, I should also be allowed to disagree too. Giggs was very good yesterday and scored a cracking goal. But he was up against a spent Carr mind you.
Finally, should Berbatov start digging us out of holes at difficult away grounds I will come on here and praise him. I will be well pleased too. Until then, he can get right lost with his fake stats that do not tell the true story of his current United career.
Bell end!
This is the problem with you Cal… you always get things backwards, and then micro manage the debate to make yourself look like a martyr for the “league of expert know-it-alls”.
People aren’t going out of their way here to praise Berbatov, or Giggs, or Scholes… they’re just sick and tired of your ceaseless criticism.
Whether or not Berbatov is the right man for United is definitely a debateable subject… but he IS a United player, and he IS scoring goals, and he IS playing well… and your ridiculous arguments about slowing down play, and only scoring here, and not scoring there as justification for your criticism, are just that… ridiculous!
We are winning… we are top of the league… we have the most goals for… we have the least goals against… and yet here you are in the middle of an argument with fellow United fans, defending your opinion that Berbatov is “useless”… and you’ve been banging the same fuckin drum about Giggs and Scholes for the past 3/4 years.
I’d like to ask you, “what do you want form United, Cal?”… but you’d probably just tell me…
“Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching’ tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
TBF Alf, I agree 100% with Cal and Knobhead on this with Berbatov…i’ve said it from the very beginning that he is world class but he is not for us….he’d be ace in Spain for Madrid so they are more than welcome to come in and buy him if they wish too…….
Thing is, that after studying him he does slow play down and his touch is both mercurial and spazzy at the same time……..he’s like a cross between Steven Hawkins and err.. well he is Steven Hawkins….clever but a mong at the same time.
a few points cal……….
oh i canna be arsed
no matter what we think, berbs will either go down as an abject failure or a true great
time will tell
and no, we don’t all post on here to make friends but damning us to hell is too much
take a chill pill bud
there are more important battles ahead ie taking uncleknobcheese to task
*Looks at generals as Cap is dragged barefoot and semi-conscious*
“Rape him!”
Am so sorry han!!
I have written a long long stuff to Alfie and it got deleted or something.
Anyway, this is it again:
Alfie, you are the bellend. Like you never criticised our play, or player? I will support Berbatov, Giggs, Scholes and even Neville when they are playing for us. No doubt about that. However, I will not be hoodwinked or be railroaded into thinking what is not there.
I was one of the strongest defenders of SAF when this RANT first started. The ED will testify to that. I came on here to defend O’Shea, Richardson and Park all those years ago. I kept on saying that we will win the title very soon in the face of proper fights from the anti-SAF posters. You were one of Nani’s strongest critics here while I kept on about how I believed that he was going to come right for us cos he had the ability and bravery to play for Manchester United. You are so critical of Gibson while I believe he is good enough to play for us. I still believe that Evans has the talent and mojo to play for us and he will come good again.
I believed in Hernancez and wrote him in my signature before he played a league game for us because I had watched him for Mexico and liked what I saw. I support Manchester United.
However, I will not be made to believe that white is black when it comes to some players. I believe that Berbatov is not and was not what we needed. I am not fooled by his current purple patch. I believe and am convinced that Scholes and Neville are finished while Giggs should not be given one more season. Where are all those people who kept banging on about what Owen will bring to us? One winner against City in the derby and that is it. Ok, he equalised in the Carling Cup final before limping off as usual.
Frankly Alfie, get right lost. I am entitled to my views. You are to yours.
You don’t think we should have signed him… fair enough.
I don’t think we should have signed Hargreaves… but if Hargreaves came back… started bossing the midfield, distributing the ball well, and chipping in with the odd goal… in other words… if Hargreaves actually started to play well, and doing the job he was bought for… I sure as fuck wouldn’t be bending over backwards to find reasons to complain about him… and THAT is the issue here.
Berbatov is not everybodys’ type of player… but he’s not a surprise either… we knew he was a bit of a lazy twat when we bought him… but the bottom line here is this… Fergie brought him in to do a job, link up with Rooney and score goals… now, if at the end of the year, you want to argue that he didn’t really show up in the big games, and he was or wasn’t a big part of our success or failure… then fair enough… but the way I see it… right now, we’re top of the table, and Berbatov has been playing his part… you might even think he could do more… but to just endlessly slag him off, and ask stupid fuckin questions like “what’s he good for?”… especially when you’ve got a reputatiuon for behaving the same way towards Giggs and Scholes… who I might add are also playing their parts in another WINNING season… just makes you look like a complete fuckin tool.
“Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching’ tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
Good post, Alf. I totally agree.
You views are not the problem… your arguments are…
You’re right about Nani… I said he was gash, because his game was too selfish and wasteful, like many others here… and we have all been very honest and pleased to admit we were wrong… it’s called credit where it’s due.
Your problem is your refusal to acknowledge when you’re wrong… and you are wrong a lot… Giggs plays well, you say fuck all… Scholes plays well, you say fuck all… but as soon as they have a bad game… you are in there like a fly on a turd, bleating about how they’re rubbish and past it, and only you can see it, and blah, blah… and even when everyone agrees with you, but points out that there is no one better in the squad… you still go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on…………………………………………………………..
Then there’s Berbatov… you don’t like him… fine, we get it… but your criticism is ridiculous… you can explain it, and reason it, and justify it all you want… still ridiculous… he’s playing well and scoring goals for fun… complain all you like… you make yourself look more and more foolish with every word.
Rubbish again you turd.
When Giggs and Scholes play well I will always say it. Funny thing is that whenever I say it, you ALL jump on it to wonder if am high on something. I am not a flip flopper I will tell you again and as far as those veterans are concerned my views are consistent: they should have been phased out so we can progress. We can not wind the clock back. Our team needs to progress and move forward and the manager resorting to these players so many times is not good for it. So, them playing well the ODD time is not going to make me think differently.
I have not said I do not LIKE Berbatov per se. I would rather he was more consistent especially in big games. We paid £30.75m for him so I believe am entitled to ask for a bit more from him.
If we were having this debate last season, I would have agreed with you re Berbatov slowing the game down – but he looks a different player this season. He’s got more fire in his belly and he is looking to get on the ball more and make things happen. There’s less of the slagging of team mates and more getting on with the game. I personally think he deserves a bit more respect.
You talk about games where Berbatov has not been selected or games where he has been subtituted but, in my view, Fergie will extremely rarely take Rooney out of the firing line. In a big game, where we’re playing one up front on his own, Fergie will pick Rooney. He is more naturally suited to that role than Berbatov. Berbatov played up front on his own last season v Blackburn and it simply didn’t work.
It’s not an indictment on Berbatov, just a case that Rooney is better suited as a lone striker. Fergie himself has admitted that he could barely justify to Berbatov why he dropped him against Arsenal because he was playing so well in previous matches. I think Fergie knows more than the rest of us.
As for substituting Berbatov, I simply think that Rooney is Fergie’s preferred striker. How often does Rooney get subbed off for anyone? I wouldn’t read too much into these things. Rooney has been complete dog shit for most of the season (apart from the home game v B’ham) but gets picked nearly every week – and funnily enough, he gets a free pass on here.
Oh, and yes, Berba was very good at Everton. I cannot forget his performance against them. Perhaps your memories of the game have been clouded by the 2 late goals?
Judge him at the end of the season.
LOL… true that…
Cal… only you could make it sound as if you were criticising Berbatovs lack of impact… in a game he didn’t even play.
Fantastic response Sheesh. Well thought out. That everton game has annoyed me more than ANY other this season and that includes the Brom game. I shall judge him at the end of the season.
Believe me Rooney does not get a free pass from me. He went through the floor in my estimation after his transfer debacle and perhaps that maybe why am peeved with Berbatov that we still have to rely on Rooney in big games. I have chosen to just watch the Scouser and see how he can dig himself out of the hole he dug himself.
rooney gets a free pass from me on account of six years of brilliance in spite of taggart, and truthful comments about the riff raff of our squad and lack of ambition from gill and ginsoak
even if shrek don’t score, his all round play is bang on the money even if it is a lot of runningaboutiness. last season he was unplayable until March, easily the best in the EPL.
he can do it again and the fact that berbs is on another level at the moment will make sure rooney is even more determined to bum up blackpool
Rooney won’t get a free press from me. Running his mouth off the way he did. I will judge him harsher than ever. No player is bigger than the club. As if he gave a stuff about the ambitions of the club when he was offered that bumper salary increase. Amazing how his questions about ambition were satisfied after that, eh?
I fucking hate that no player is being given the club stuff, ffs we’ve got a manager who thinks he’s bigger than the club
Like it or loathe it, Fergie’s success helped make the club as big as it is today and, yes, no player is bigger than the club.
Each trophy we win really is like a bitch slap against your face, isn’t it?
that should be bigger than
why canyt I type properly
fergie does think he’s bigger than the club tho, selling players cause they’ve had personal pro blems with him, sticking his son in the first team, the magnier and mcmanus stuff, this loan issue with preston, he knows he’s unsackable and uses it, he should be sacked, he’ll stick gills son in the first team to keep the board sweet
and this not speaking to the bbc nonsense, which I’m pretty sure the club is paying the fines for
why don’t u ask him to stick u in the 1st team too u deluded twat
Knobby,
go and make up with your wife. Or your boyfriend or whoever is your lover. That way you will stop these things you are writing.
If I had the money I will pay him not to speak to the BBC.
knobby’s lover is his right hand…….
