Manchester United fans plan a beach-ball ‘tribute’ to Darren Bent’s winning goal in Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool Saturday, when the Old Trafford outfit visit Anfield this weekend. The £10 Red Beach Kit sold out as United fans rushed to buy the tasteless Liverpool branded ball from the LFC Online shop, according to reports today.
Liverpool stewards will search United fans as they enter the Anfield Road Stand, it was confirmed by Anfield officials.
Darren Bent’s fifth-minute strike stood, despite his shot taking a deflection off a beach ball and wrong-footing Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Under law five of the game the referee must stop the match if an outside agent interferes with play. Mike Jones allowed the goal to stand after the match ball, hurled on to the pitch by a Liverpool supporter, struck the inflatable inside the six-yard area.
The ball has mysteriously disappeared from the LFC shop, although is still available in large quantities on eBay.
Liverpool is yet to comment on whether a one-minute’s silence will be held before the match.
Wonder if the kid who threw the beach ball onto the pitch is still alive
