Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a move for former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell, 35, according to reports. The defender, who is out of contract following a controversial exit from League Two side Notts County in September, is a short-term option for Manchester United with nine defenders now out injured.
Campbell would not be the first aging pro to attract Ferguson’s interest. The Scot has previously signed Laurent Blanc, Henrik Larsson and Andy Goram with varying degrees of success. Meanwhile, Michael Owen, 29, signed on a free transfer this summer following rejections from numerous Premier League clubs.
Even so, Campbell’s signature just might be the most bizarre yet. With Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans suffering long-term injuries Ferguson is short of central defenders but Campbell, who has played just once this season, is hardly likely to hit the ground running in the Premier or Champions Leagues.
Campbell joined the mysteriously funded revolution at Notts Country this summer only to fall out with management after what he considered broken promises. County, whose ownership is not clear, has attracted Sven Goran Eriksson as a Director together with former Premier League players Kasper Schmeichel and Michael Ball.
