Blue Monday
Ed & Paul look back at United’s defeat at neighbours City, analysing Sir Alex Ferguson’s team sheet and tactics. Just how badly did the Reds get it wrong at Eastlands and where do we go from here? We talk goals and player of the season nominations, ahead of the awards later in the campaign, and we review the FA’s appointment of Roy Hodgson as the new England manager. Also, could Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa be on his way to Old Trafford this summer, and who would we like to bolster the United squad? Finally, we take all your questions and preview the weekend’s games ahead.

I love Rantcast so much
Extremely balanced and good analysis
The IPO really needs to happen this summer. The debt has become utterly unsustainable given the impact it is now having on the sporting side of the club. The Glazers must must must get rid of the debt, or that the club will implode from a sporting perspective. They must stop the rot in the playing side, and they have to give Ferguson basically ANYTHING he needs to get the team more competitive.
Excellent as ever. As soon as I saw that team sheet on Monday what your thoughts would be – and they were the same as just about every United fan.
It makes me genuinely sad, but I can’t help but wonder if we’re going to win nothing unless we have at least a number 2 willing to say to Fergie: We’ve lost 8 out of 10 matches Park has started, and all 5 Giggs and Park have played together.
I can’t decide what’s scarier – the thought that Fergie knew this and played the two anyway, or that no one bothered telling him.
Apparently Gaitan is flirting with United….
isn’t he mainly a winger?
what is it with Ferguson and wingers?
Got a feeling we won’t be signing him if we go for this Kagawa fella.
I think Gaitan would be the better bet, but he’s about 10 mill more expensive.
We don’t. Red another winger and tbh gaitan hasn’t impressed me all that much. Kagawa would buy a nice buy as long as he’s not the only mf to come in this summer.

I think he would more used as a cm, the role he played for most of his time at benfica. However kagawa looks decent. Would be a bit depressing if all we bought in the summer were players who are at the end of their contract or entering their last year. Sports club with the biggest revenue in the world and are buying on the cheap.
What so if we bought Robin van Persie you’d be disappointed?
Love the part about your respective reactions to the defeat.
My socialist beliefs reared their head around the time the team sheet was read out.
Everything you said about the club models of United and City was spot on.
Yeah that’s right we are going to buy Van Persie.
That’s not the point is it. You said buying players nearing the end of their contract shows a lack of ambition, which is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read on United Rant. It has nothing to do with the quality if the player in question. The only difference is saving 5-10MIL on transfer fees, which isn’t Glazernomics, it’s just good business.
Was the word ambition mentioned?
Well that was clearly what you were implying. But like I said, it’s nonsense. I don’t have the figures, but I woud imagine a large percentage of transfers are done with only a year left on the contract.
For some reason you think it’s ‘depressing’ that United would sign a player who only has a year left on their contract.
You are confusing decadence with ambition. Easy mistake to make in an era of foreign investment. Or ‘Sugarnomics’ if you will.
‘Sheikhonomics’ & ‘Romanomics’ would also be appropriate when referring to City and Chelsea, respectively.
Smalling Lindegaard Bebe Hernandez Jones and De Gea were not all in the last year of their contracts. Get your facts right first.
Are you some kind of fucking idiot?
What does that have to do with anything?
Actually don’t reply… you’re either a troll or too stupid to talk to me. Thanks.
What an educated and intelligent use of the English language!
We have enough money to buy class players but what I get from SAF is there is no value in the market. SAF still believes that the payers he has now can win everything. Just the other day he was saying how great a player Anderson is and I said to myself, this man is definately losing his mind. When you bring in players like Bebe, Obertan and Diouf you know something is wrong with this picture. There is plenty of value in the market, is SAF getting to old for the job? But SAF did say yesterday that he is looking to bring in three new signings this summer but he did not specify if they are defenders, midfielders or strikers. He claims Berbatov will stay so he must be looking at a defender and two midfield players.
I believe he said Berba will stay only if a good offer doesn’t come in. But I’d be shocked if he were here next season. He also said he COULD bring 1, 2 or 3 new players in. You can scratch Hazard’s name off of the list now so that’s one less quality CM that we won’t get.
I teach Communication, and I just want to say that viewed from every angle the Podcasts are impressive, this one being no exception. Great analysis, humour, geniality, warmth and clarity of voice.
Glad that you focused on the great man’s tinkering. Surely something npt quite right is going on in the murky depths of that Glaswegian unconscious mind. I just thought: Fergie must thank his lucky stars the Creator isn’t as compulsive a tinkerer as he is: otherwise we would see our illustrious manager transforming before our eyes every ninety minutes: first with a single cyclops eye, two arms and three legs; then with two compound eyes, eight tentacles and a fish tail instead of legs; then…
Maybe then he would know what we feel like when the team sheet is announced and there is no Valenica to terrorize the City left back and a JS Park to fall over when Toure so much as breathes in his general direction.
Congrats to Brain Kidd if City do do the expected against QPR. The one man loved by both the red and blue halves of Manchester. I hope Fergie doesn’t end up the one man hated by both halves (my bet is he will if he sticks around for a few more trophyless years).
