Transfer Special
On this week’s one-off transfer special, Ed & Paul look back on United’s summer window when the club spent around £150 million on six senior players: Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and, spectacularly, Radamel Falcao. In addition to new arrivals there’s a look at United’s outgoings, rivals’ window and what might be to come as United’s management accelerate squad revolution under Louis van Gaal.

The writeup is wrong… 6 senior players… Daley Blind… The forgotten man 🙁
woohoo, excellent!
My thought is that Van Gaal is not impressed with any of our forwards’ current form. So he is getting a striker who will directly compete with our seemingly ‘undroppable’ 2 lead strikers.
Unfortunately Welbeck went further down the order, and he made the right choice for his career. Nobody is to blame. Nobody is trying to change the identity of the club. Everybody in the club is trying stop United fall further away from the race.
Now if even one of RVP and Rooney showed the form of a top forward, I doubt Van Gaal would’ve given the final greenlight for Falcao. And maybe Welbeck would’ve stayed.
It will be interesting to watch the response of RVP and Rooney on the pitch. Surely none of them wants to be dropped?
(It would be very funny if Falcao and Wilson displaced the two, btw 😀 )
great stuff as always. cheers!
what is d latest on falcao
spending my lunch break in work listening
No mention of Michael Carrick when listing midfield options!! Already forgotten…!
As ever this is magic. Ed’s financial acumen. Paul’s psychological clarity. Shared wit and insight. Just ace. Ta.
Regarding hatred toward academy players that don’t come good, it’s like people have their expectations for academy players set by the Class of 92. As if the mindset is that if someone coming through the academy gets a year or two of semi-regular play in the first team, then they expect them to be the next great super star. And if they aren’t quite at the level of that absurdly talented and legendary class, then they’re a disgrace to the shirt. Not just the Cleverly and Gibson types, but guys like Fletcher, O’Shea, and Welbeck have all had way too many haters among our own fanbase. Though to be fair, the twitter and message board worlds make that all seem more than it really is.
listened gleefully last night…my favourite in a good while (understandably!!!)…great stuff lads 🙂
Agreed with most of what was said on here, as usual, my only gripe is with the transfer fee debate. I think it was Ed who was talking about the di Maria fee being high and us paying a premium for not being in the Champions League.
European football (or lack thereof) has nothing to do with transfer fees as it makes no difference to the selling club whether we’re in the Champions League or not. If anything they may be more wiling to sell to a non CL club as they are not selling to a competitor.
What a lack of CL does undoubtedly impact are the wages we pay. In that regard, yes, we do pay a premium on wages in order to get players to join us to compensate for them not playing in Europe.
I think this was touched upon a couple of rant casts back but seen so many news paper reports and heard so many people make that mistake I think it should be cleared up.
Luke – I really couldn’t disagree more. Real Madrid not desperate to sell, United desperate to buy. Other potential buyers, whether real or manufactured, included PSG and City, both in Europe. Hence United forced to pay a large premium. United’s negotiating position significantly weaker than other parties. Cleared up enough for you?
We both agree that we paid a premium on this transfer. Madrid would have undoubtedly been aware of the pressure piling on Woodward to make a signing and exploited it. Woodward actually coming out and saying we’re richer than God and can afford to break the transfer record didn’t help. United also invariably seem to end up paying a premium on most transfers. Whilst the “European football” aspect would have contributed towards the fee its probably not the main driver behind it – desperation from having left it so late and stupidity was
If United followers go online and vent spleen against United players, I suspect a large part of that is due to their feeling utterly otherwise disenfranchised by the club: Ferguson telling us he has the best squad ever as he shops at Lidl for the likes of Smalling; the Glazers ramping up ticket prices to fund their “management fees” and interest payments, etc. A little simplistic to just blame those posting without recognising the circumstances that has created the behaviour.
Personally, I can’t find the words to explain how I feel about Valencia and Anderson still being at the club. I would like the former to give an interview in which he explains exactly how he adds to United’s goal threat every time he receives the ball, by remaining completely still whilst the opposition defence sorts itself out, before passing backwards. And I do mean Every Time.
I’d also like Valencia to return the last 2 years’ wages, because he hasn’t done a thing to earn them, and to take his stupid frown face the fuck away from my club. I don’t actually believe he was given a contract extension this summer, it must have been a conceptual joke on van Gaal’s part, as is 3-4-1-2: an ironic response to the absurdity of our full back situation.
Q. When isn’t Rafael da Silva injured ?
A. When he’s suspended.
Giggs was instrumental in getting Valencia a new contract. Thank goodness we didn’t go with him as fulltime manager.
