Ed & Paul look back on United’s draw with West Ham at Old Trafford, asking why the team failed to score despite recording 21 shots on goal. While United’s draw with the east London side offered more positive signs than the previous week’s stalemate, the pod asks whether Louis van Gaal is truly making progress? Also on the show – a look forward to United’s Champions League exit against Wolfsburg in Germany and the (more than likely) bore draw with Bournemouth on the south coast.

If Guardiola is already promised to Abu Dhabi, it does not follow that van Gaal should be kept on at United for a 3rd season.
A major reason why Moyes was moved out was his unsuitability to carry out a huge squad renewal with a huge budget at an elite level. How is van Gaal doing in that regard ? Exactly how much money and how much time does he want ? How does United’s “genius” progress after 18 months and how many hundreds of millions, stack up against what Klopp has already achieved in a space of weeks – with a spend of zero ? What trajectory are Liverpool now on, what trajectory are van Gaal’s United on ?
Guardiola has perhaps already been taken, will perhaps be leading a domestic rival into battle before too long. If we don’t act quickly, he will likely be replaced at Bayern by the currently available Ancelotti. And we’ll have another year of 0-0, then what – the chance to find out if Giggs has got it anymore than, say, Bryan Robson or Paul Ince ?
Wake up Woodward. Noodle partner revenue shouldn’t be the only measure of success around here.
Wow. The 1 billion United fans are so disappointing at the moment… forgetting about their history. Success is not your damn right and we’re in the process of rebuilding. If you’re angry, hold a protest outside the stadium. Don’t boo like Madrid scum.
When United crashed out of Champions League in 2005-06:
“Paul Scholes gave United the perfect start in their quest to reach the knockout stage with a close-range finish after only six minutes. But Geovanni’s diving header quickly put Benfica level and Beto fired in a second from 20 yards before half-time.
The defeat leaves Sir Alex Ferguson’s side bottom of Group D and means they do not even qualify for the Uefa Cup.
Ferguson cut a disconsolate figure sitting back in his dug-out at the final whistle and is now poised to face even more hard questions about his Old Trafford future.”
Ferguson:
“Ferguson said the exit was a setback, but would not put a stop to the rebuilding work he had in mind. ‘That is not a problem to me – we have a job to do and the rebuilding will carry on,’ he said.”

Sounds familiar? This is not new, if you weren’t born in 2007 to a United silver-platter.
“And that is why this desperate performance in Lisbon leaves Ferguson facing a fight for his managerial career.”
Totally agree. Back then Utd had a young Rooney and Ronaldo. Now they have a young Memphis and Martial. 18 months after that exit Utd lifted the league title and a year later the champions league. These things happen. Anyone would think Utd always reached at least the semi-final.
By the way, fans at the time were calling for Fergie to leave and for “that flop Ronaldo” to to be sold!!!
Dr. Frankenstein has wasted a heck of a lot of body parts in putting together this ugly, unloved creature.
Um, no.
I was a fan in 2005 and 2006 and it was not this dire sorry.
Also, Ed & Paul, I must have been watching a different West Ham match. I was bored out of my mind and I turned it off at halftime, fully confident (but taking no joy in being so) that it would finish 0-0. Fact is chances or no we have no meat eaters on this team and I can’t ever see where the goals will come from for the life of me.
It’s a petty observation to be sure, but when I was recently in England I picked up my first United kit in years and opted against a name on the shirt. I honestly couldn’t think of anyone I liked enough or that I thought was permanent enough. This team is mediocre through and through.
First five minutes of Wolfs was the same. I knew we’d lose it. The other team looked hungrier. That’s the story every week, even against inferior opposition. If the Prem wasn’t having a down year and we didn’t luck out with Martial (to some degree), we’d be sixth or worse. Consider that…
When is the next one coming out?
