Three Day Bender
Sore head this morning? You should have after United beat Everton at Wembley to reach the FA Cup final, following shortly on from another solid Premier League win. Could Louis van Gaal’s team make a late charge to reach the Champions League and end the season with silverware? Ed & Paul look back on United’s two victories this week – performances built on a change in formation and a more attacking outlook. It has only take the Dutchman two years to work out the formula, but will he actually stick with it? In addition to looking back on a momentous day at Wembley, the pod looks forward to United’s fixture with champions-elect Leicester City at Old Trafford next weekend and takes your questions.

Been listening to the pod a long time but over the last few months, I have to say the tone of pod have been overly depressing. Even when we played really well last week in both games it still felt like losses going from the tone.
While I agree generally with your views on LVG (the overall style of play, substitutions, and press conferences) I completely disagree with your points on Martial LW/LWF position and Daley Blind as a CB.
On Martial, I believe LVG is right to play him as a LW/LWF, he doesn’t make the type of penetrative runs(unlike Chicharito or Rashford recently) has to make LVG’s system work. This explains Rashford has not been displaced as the focal point of our attack even with the return of Rooney. Watch all his goals and you would see that he prefers the ball played to feet than in behind.(Martial plays wide for France even with Giroud starting up top sometimes)
Daley Blind has been a complete joy to watch a CB most of this season, and given the constant criticisms, one would think that we should have conceded far more than we have(Not saying that he is the main reason we have been good defensively). The option to have an extra player with his passing quality and technique on the pitch should only be considered a plus to any team.I would indeed be very surprised that he wouldn’t be integral to any future manager’s plans in midfield or defense.
Finally, LVG doesn’t suck the attacking verve out of his attacking players. Even after a whole season with LVG, Martial doesn’t look to be playing with less attacking verve than he did on his debut. Rashford is also playing with the confidence to attempt skills and tricks. Memphis vs Midtjylland at OT, was a joy to watch, which should not have happened according to theories against LVG.
LVG deserves criticism for a lot of things, but give him credit when he gets things right(in my opinion).
What a pod. Our normally intransigent host actually has some kind words for the captain. Paul does a passable Barry White impression. Everyone is agreed that Antony is the new messiah and that LVG needs to disappear ASAP. Great work gents. Bring on the Cup Final. Come on United!
Leicester can win title, even if they lose to United, but Tottenham do not win at Chelsea, right?
— If so, we will beat Leicester… I know it!
Admire your positivity Paul but stop talking up LVG. Under him the entertaining football matches have been the exception not the rule.
Let him get an FA Cup win on his CV and then give him the flick.
It’s been a tough few seasons but I agree it’s been a good week. LVG’s United though is just like a drug addicted old friend: occasionally such charisma and such promise, but totally unreliable when it matters.
THROW YOUR ARMS OUT WIDE!!!
MARCUS RASHFORD’S IN THE SIDE!!!
THROW YOUR ARMS OUT WIDE!!!
ONE GOAL FROM HIM TODAY WILL SEE US RIGHT!!!
I don’t care if LVG runs the table and wins the cup. I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care. He still should go. He has been awful most of this season, and again, what has worked for him is sheer, utter and dumb fucking luck (Rashford and Martial and Lingard).
Paul are you on drugs? Progression in the second half of the season? Because other teams ahead of us fell apart and we won a few games in between playing terribly and completely losing the plot in entire games? Did you watch Aston Villa?
