Same old United, always winning – at Wembley. José Mourinho’s team returned to the capital just 78 days after collecting the FA Cup to bag the Community Shield with victory over Leicester City. Much has changed in the interim: new manager, new faces, and a new belief that the dark times of the past three seasons are now over. Ed & Paul review United’s performance at Wembley, and look forward to the new campaign proper, which begins against Bournemouth at Dean Court next weekend. There’s a discussion about United’s latest move in the transfer market – for Paul Pogba – your questions answered, and bonus content (for Patreon backers!)

I’m very happy to welcome pogba
Thanks for the pod. On formations, I wonder whether Pogba really is wasted sitting in centre midfield. Maybe he didn’t put in his best performances there in the Euros, but he has played well there before. I wonder whether it’s just a question of discipline and whether we really want glory boy Pogba, or humble warrior Pogba. Just a thought, but I think he has all the attributes to be the perfect centre mid in a 4-2-3-1, he can be destructive, with his physical presence and creative with his skills. Amazing close control so good against a press, surely we want him involved as much as possible. Maybe getting the best out him in CM/DM is just about psychology.
Lingard spoke about players being allowed to change roles up front, so it’s not inconceivable that Rooney and Pogba might interchange, but I doubt it. I don’t think Mourinho will drop Rooney though, I just think we’re in for another season with him running through treacle in cast iron boots somewhere between the half way line and the penalty box.
Otherwise, excited by the season ahead….
I think you’re both massively underestimating Liverpool. Klopp is a great great manager. I think he is mustering something very real and that they will definitely be pushing top four if not the title. Leicester last season had great strategy, strong individual players, good management but as cheesy as it is I would say that they won because they played as a team and believed in themselves and each other. I think Liverpool look closer to that than any of the other seven teams. I see the biggest problem for United right now is that there is no core team and many players are undestandably gonna be thinking about their own future at the club and where exactly they fit in. I hope I’m wrong and Mourinho gets that siege mentality bringing everyone close together, with Zlatan tutoring Rashford and Depay and Rooney working with the under 21s.. But anyway. Liverpool. More of a shot than Arsenal or Chelsea I would say.
I said last season that Klopp would revive the dipper’s fortunes but Denton Davey, bless ‘im, wasn’t having any of it. Time will tell but I think they’ve got a long way to go before they overtake Arsenal and Chelsea, a team I expect to be up there challenging under Conte’s management.
As for us, well, the Pogba signing is a huge statement of intent and that’s all well and good. We’ve been lacking a real box-to-box general since Keano left. I still think another central defender is needed and I wonder why we didn’t try and gazump the berties for Stones. Jose wanted him last season for Chelsea and I doubt he’s cooled on the player since. Bailly looks a very good prospect though. Smalling isn’t in the same league as Pallister or Rio but having a steady partner should help him. So who’s going to leave before the end of the month?
What’s the name of the tune at the end of the pod? Thanks.
J’ai déconné by Keblack, had to listen very carefully and search for every phrase that was similar to what I could make out until I found it! Turns out there’s a video of Evra and Pogba dancing to it on YouTube. Always enjoy discovering songs from the end of the Rant Cast, easily one of my favourite podcasts, they do a fantastic job and am glad they’re getting rewarded on Patreon.
First of all, 4-3-3 is not going to happen because JM does play that way, he plays with one striker and two FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY, LEAVE WAZZA ALONE. He will play, I promise you he’ll play, behind Ibra….get over it gents..#rooneyagenda
As long as he’s scoring goals, he should play. Can’t help feeling that this season will be his swansong though. He’ll leave as United’s record goalscorer (and England’s) which is an incredible achievement.
