Mourinho Time
Feels good, doesn’t it? Victory. Not just any victory though, but one achieved with a goal deep into ‘Fergie Time’. The players loved it, the fans loved it. Even José Mourinho seemed to love it. In this episode Ed & Paul look back on United’s win over Hull City at the KC through Marcus Rashford’s 92nd minute winner. With no game next week, there’s a look ahead to the international break, and plenty of your questions. Bonus content for Patreon backers includes an additional 30 minute Q&A.

@UtdRantcast I can’t believe Pogba, with his kung-fu moves, was overlooked for hardest United player
finally?
Do you guys feel we are wasting Pogba by playing him in the position he is right now ? Would he be more effective if he is played further up the pitch ?
Pogba is definitely more effective when he’s higher up the pitch, but he’s also solid defensively and we don’t have an abundance of defensive quality in our midfielders. This is why I feel Rooney is so important to this system, he’s very good at allowing others to move into his area and dropping into their position to cover. We have wingers that love to come inside, a striker who loves to drop deep, and a midfielder who loves to bomb forward. Rooney is capable of covering all those positions effectively and I don’t know how well our other no. 10 options would do in the role Rooney’s had in these first three games. Mikhi and Mata aren’t as willing to drop back and defend for long periods the way Rooney does and Pogba isn’t as effective in wider positions as Rooney. I really think he’s been a major reason why this team has looked so fluid in attack, yet so solid in defense.
Pretty much done, not having a go at you guys. The patreon was a bit much but I get that you gotta do what you gotta do. The whole “rooney played well lets just say nothing” was pretty vile. He’s been in great form in the first three games and a big reason for our start to the season and you’ve not even gone anywhere near giving him some tangible credit for it. I’m done. Enjoy.
US: “Hey would you like to totally voluntarily back, financially, this podcast that we’ve been working on for free for the last seven years? We’ll give you free stuff if you do, but no insult taken if not…”
YOU: “The patreon was a bit much”
Come on @ lecoqdezellwiller. We work hard on this podcast and on the website. If people want to recognise that, wonderful. If not, what harm does this do to you?
As for Rooney. Nope don’t agree he’s played well. It’s my opinion, I don’t see why that’s vile. If you don’t agree and that means you don’t want to listen, ok, that’s fine. There’s probably content out there you’ll enjoy more. By the way, I think I described his assist as a ‘wonderful run and set up’.
Great interview Paul.
Interesting season to come… Memphis will be back!!
Could Blind play alongside Pogba with Smalling and Bailly behind?
Also.. Maybe saying nothing about Rooney will somehow speed up his phase out. If Rooney misplaces a pass in the middle of the woods with nobody around to talk about it…
Thanks for the pod. I had a number of comments but have forgotten most of them. I will say that I liked the interview a lot, but you have to either skim read, or pretend to have read, the book the guest is plugging!
I have to say I think Blind has been perfect so far alongside Bailly, I don’t think the perfect centre back exists, you’re always looking for partnerships and they complement each other very well. I think Smalling’s out of the team until it stops working.
I wouldn’t say your comments about Rooney are unfair or classist, but you do need to keep the tone from getting too cynical or hate-y, so I’m glad you’re pulling back a bit on that subject. I’ve been frustrated watching him slow down our play for the last 3 or 4 years, but playing devil’s advocate he can still come up with key moments in matches. You can’t argue with one goal and three assists in four matches really. He’s probably been a bit of a scapegoat for wider problems in the United side over the past few years. This season I think Martial has been worse than Rooney.
I think he’ll go full Romero for the Europa League, which personally I am interested in btw. Romero, Rojo, Smalling, Jones, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Lingard, Memphis, Mikky T, Rashford.
