No Medicine but Hope
What to make of United? Handsome victory over Feyenoord in the Europa League followed by yet another deeply frustrating home draw with West Ham in the Premier League. The domestic result leaves United 11 points behind the league leaders, with qualification for next season’s Champions League all but a rapidly fading dream. Ed & Paul look back on all the fallout from United’s two games this week and ask what Mourinho can do to turn results around. There’s a look ahead to games against West Ham in the League Cup and a trip to Everton in the Premier League. This week’s special guest is BBC presenter and top red Mark Chapman!

It’s November (well, almost December) and there are many games to go. Teams above us will drop points and we have to go to City and Arsenal while Chelsea and Liverpool have to come here. A top four place is within reach and I fully expect us to go on a winning run. Now all this may qualify as ‘vague hope’ but have a bit of faith. Mourinho has a huge task ahead of him and we are playing much better football than we were a year ago and that’s a big plus.
Utd plays better with Carrick in the side, not because of Carrick but because Carrick allows Pogba to push forward where he is effective. Am I the only one who has noticed that Pogba offers nothing when he’s not on the ball. He doesn’t mark players, tackle, track back, or sense danger. In the final third he’s great though. He’s creative, difficult to shake off the ball and can shoot.
Early in the season Mourinho played Pogba and Fellaini as a defensive midfield pair with Rooney ahead of them. That failed. Once he started dropping Rooney and playing Pogba behind Zlatan we started to click. That coincided with Herrera playing alongside Carrick. Herrera can play box to box. He can both defend and contribute to attack depending on the situation.
In my opinion Carrick’s obvious replacement is Blind. He can defend and also pick out a good long pass forward. In the long term Fosu-Mensah should have that role.
I have to give praise to Ander Herrera his passion for the club he should captain the team
Santa’s not real (Madrid)
Carrick is much taller compared to Blind. This helps in nullifying the air threats. While he is constantly looking for long passes. Pogba does not defend and that is for the coach to add the defensive side to his game.
Paul’s incredible reaction to Ed suggesting that creating chances/conceding few chances wasn’t a recipe for success
