Sex, Lies and Wayne Rooney’s Contract
In this episode – recorded before Wayne Rooney signed his new contract today – Ed & Paul talk about the ongoing saga: is it a case of player greed gone mad or the Glazers’ poor investment in the first team squad? What are the morals of demanding £250,000 a week to play with a pig’s bladder? We also review the West Bromwich Albion and Bursaspor matches this week, and look forward to this weekend’s tough fixture against Stoke City at the Britannia.

I don’t think it was Rooney’s greed, cause what I had been hearing on BBC, seems more like Rooney’s agent putting him up to it. The agent had to be getting these offers and two clubs in particular willing to pay him 250,000 a week. Everything was going on behind the scenes with his agent. United then were offering 160,000 a week but Rooney refused to sign that contract because most likely his agent told him not to because he could make more money playing for someone else. Rooney would not come out and say that, so he chose to lay the blame on the team not being good enough to win anything and the Glazers, Gill and Fergie refusing to spend money on world class players. To me, it looks like they agreed to do things that Rooney had suggested just to put an end to this saga and put an end to all this going on being blasted all over the media. It could be also that they did not want to have to sell Rooney to Man City in January for 50 million, but instead they can now sell him in the summer to Real Madrid for 50 million. Mourinho had already said that the club was unable to do business in January, but were willing to do business in the summer. We will have to see, but lets see what team SAF puts out there against Stoke. I believe Rooney is still injured.
I think most of us could predict the starting eleven in the match with Stoke and get at least nine correct. I would play:
VDS
Rafael / Rio / Vidic / Evra
Nani / Fletcher / Carrick / Scholes / Obertan
Berbatov
…but I do worry that Sir Alex might play either or both of Anderson and Park. Since Park has trouble staying on his feet against even the least physical sides, I cannot imagine wanting to play him at Stoke, but Sir Alex always makes at least one selection that pisses me off. Anderson for Carrick wouldn’t bother me that much, but if he plays instead of Scholes…
anderson cannot pass, shoot, head, kick, run, walk, eat, talk or write. i have no idea why evolution contrived to produce him
I agree with your appraisal, but evolution is constantly producing mutations; those that don’t work, don’t proliferate.
Berbatov usually does not play well either if he is the lone striker. I would put Nani up front with Berbatov because Nani is hungry for goals. On the right wing I would play Bebe or Obertan. Could use both Bebe and Obertan, one on the left and one on the right.
Would be an interesting experiment: using speed on the flanks to bypass a clogged midfield, but I don’t see it happening.
i see your point about mutations, occassionally he knows what the round leather thing is and decides to play but 45 seconds out of 90 mins is not a decent return on 18 m.
Need to get those midfielders working, could use the pace.
Stoke probably are going to pack their defence and try to catch us against the run of play. We need to put some pacey youngsters out there to shake them up a bit. Need to hit them hard and fast.
Chelsea should hammer Wolves but I think Arsenal will beat Man City. Watching City play on TV, they are a more physical team, don’t really play all that well, but Arsenal should be too slick for them.
expecting carrick ahead of anderson and oshea ahead of one of the fullbacks because they’re taller
anderson, at this point he’s pretty much a long haired quinton fortune, I’d like to back him and use the out of position arguement but thinking about it you’d still expect him to show the odd xfactor moment in spite of that, off the top of my head I can’t think of any, anyone?
O’Shea at right back and Park at left wing, the perfect combination to raise my blood pressure while simultaneously lowering my interest in the match as well as my expectation of a result.
Please, Sir Alex, just this once, put out the best side you have available to you.
dead horses for courses
Anderson is still very young in a traditionally late-blooming position (central midfield), and has had two serious injuries already, including a cruciate injury just recently. Given that the players around him are not playing well (Carrick and Fletcher), and that he has played well for us in the past, I think it’s ridiculously short-sighted to write him off.
I think Andersons problem is simply attitude.
When he first came, he showed hunger, and fought for his postion, and when he did that, he showed promise. I remember thinking, this kid has incredible instincts… just like Scholes, he seemd to spot a pass before it was even on… very exciting… and I thought… that’s it, we’re sorted for when Scholes packs it in.
But the very next year, he just seemd to stop trying… reminded me of Richardson… another talent that reckoned he’d made it then just stopped progressing.
Shame, cause I still think there is a fantastic footballer there, that might never be realized.
Can we put the Rooney issue to bed?! Finally?
The only thing Anderson has a hunger for these days is burgers. His weight aside, his passing is diabolically poor. I’m talking Lucas standards.
On the subject of Dong – he only played for Belgian club Royal Antwerp!
He’s actually playing for Portimonense S.C in the Portuguese top division at the moment. Ronnie helped with the transfer!
Portugal Belgium what’s the difference!
Moooooooooooooo
Yeah, I don’t know what has happened with Anderson. Your right when you said that when he first came to United, he looked all a star in the making. Then he started getting an attitude when he was not playing regular and SAF tried to tell him that he has to rotate players because sometimes there could be three games in 10 days. That cruciate injury that he is recovering from could now be a factor also, seems to have lost some of his skills. Seems like every United fan that comments on the midfielders feel Carrick is just a waste of time.
United fans on other websites seem to be more angry today than they were yesterday. You would think things would have calmed down but it is worse. They are saying:
Stoke 0 Newton Heath 3. They want Rooney, SAF and the Glazers out by January. Been some very hot arguments all day long and it seems its not over yet!
I don’t necessarily believe that. Judging by his recent form, he is underperforming woefully, but I have a theory about that. Carrick’s problem is in his head: he doesn’t seem able to handle being the better midfielder and the expectations that go along with that status (especially in attack). Put him in a midfield with a more established/highly regarded attacking midfielder, and his performance improves. Unfortunately, Scholes cannot play every game, and United don’t always play a 4-3-3, but if United were to buy one, top-flight attacking midfielder, the improvement in Carrick’s game might almost be likened to a second signing.
Portugal is a country, while Begium – number 86 on the periodic table of elements, I believe – is the element found in many soft and alcoholic drinks that makes one burp.
Now on another site, fans are up in arms and don’t know where they are getting their information but they are saying Rooney was angry at Fergie and wanted out because he paid 8 million for unknown Bebe when he could have bought Van de Vaart for 7 million.
Can anyone tell me when was the last time we actually paid for a world class player?I mean a player who was actually world class when we bought him.I think the last was Ted McDougal or was it Gary Birtles!(how many cold afternoons did I spend watching those wonderful assets). Many players who go to Old Trafford with high price tags and high reputations often don’t make it(Veron being an example). This is Fergusons genius. He buys players with potential and they become world beaters.Of course there are some that don’t work out (Jumba-Jumba and Clubfootson come to mind) but on the whole he tends to get it right.
Plus Ferguson walks a very thin line with the Glazers-he cannot condemn them-they are his employers. If they sack him who will they get to replace him?A yes man with no love for the club!At least Ferguson is committed to the club as an entity-he understands it,so well done to him for keeping Rooney no matter how underhand it was.
It would be great to just get on with the matters on the field. I’m sure if the team continues to struggle against the smaller clubs, SAF will do something about it but nothing can be done until the January transfer window. But for now, we can only hope SAF can get these players motivated, put the best players available out there and play the players in their correct positions. No time to keep experimenting, that should be done during pre-season.
The team that plays fairly decent football is the Carling Cup team.
