Rooney sweeps board as de Laet and Keane take awards
Wayne Rooney swept the board at the annual Manchester United awards dinner, winning the fans’, players’ player and goal of the season awards. The personal gongs are now piling up for the 25-year-old striker, who also won the PFA Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Player of the Year trophies after scoring 34 goals this season.
Rooney, a man of few words, joked that it was nice Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t win everything for a change as he shared the stage with Sir Alex Ferguson for the annual awards dinner, which honors the best youth and senior players at the club.
Rooney took the Players’ vote almost unanimously – the striker voted for Darren Fletcher – while scoring a massive 83 per cent in the supporters’ poll this season.
In addition to Rooney youngsters William Keane and Ritchie de Laet also picked up awards.
Keane took the Academy Player of the Year award after scoring 12 goals for the under-18s this season. Striker Keane was a popular choice on the day his side claimed the Academy Poll C league title. Keane’s side will now face Arsenal at Carrington for a right to play in this year’s play-off final.
Meanwhile, defender de Laet picked up the reserve team’s player of the season after a solid campaign for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s league and play-off winning side.
Rooney may yet pick up more awards this season with the Premier League Golden Boot as yet undecided. Rooney is also expected to be in the running for the European and World Player of the Year awards in the winter.
